I haven't seen it posted here yet, so let me be the first to tell everyone to go tour the B-39 Foxtrot "Cobra" in San Deigo!
I went there to see the USS Midway, and was pleasantly surprised to see a replica Royal Navy frigate (renamed the HMS Surprise and used as the exterior model in "Master and Commander") and the passenger/cargo ship "Star of India" berthed a few blocks away. Then my jaw hit the ground when I noticed the black sub docked behind the Surprise, especially when I saw the Hammer and Sickle inside the Red Star! The B-39 is a new addition to the museum: http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniont...s_1n22sub.html http://www.sdmaritime.com/contentpage.asp?ContentID=177 and isn't listed along with the other ships in the Historic Naval Ships Visitors Guide. The Surprise, being a replica, probably shouldn't count, especially since the gun deck is not very authentic, being mostly a museum and still has the "steer by wire" apparatus used for the movie. Anyway, the B-39 was in good shape. She is laid out very similar to a Gato sub. I snapped lots of pics, so I will try to post them when I can. Alas, my time was limited, but I'm heading back to SD in a few months and will try to visit her again. I encourage everyone to go, it is a very odd experience (for this American soldier anyway) to stand where a former enemy stood, especially right after coming from her target, the Midway. |

I have DW and SH3. I played the hell out of 688i back in the day (even failed a pharmacy test because of it %> so I'm looking forward to DW. I'm playing SH3 now since I have minimal game time and can only remember 1 set of commands at a time! I used to play Silent Service (pacific war, right?) and dabbled with Aces of the Deep. This is my first WW2 sub sim in a LONG time.
Oh, I also forgot that the Star of India has a really nice set of posters displaying the development of the submarine. |

Jason,
Thanks for the heads up! The "HMS Surprise" is actually the tall thip Rose- http://www.tallshiprose.org/ Like you pointed out, many of these tall ships have modern contraptions aboard. Very few in the world that don't- being original (USS Constitution, HMS Victory, Wasa). Some history of the Foxtrot class- http://www.fas.org/MAN/dod-101/sys/ship/row/rus/641.htm Yours, Mike IYAAYAS! |

I saw a Foxtrot in Long Beach by QM before I went down to school in San Diego. Now that I'm here though I might have to check it out.
Thanks |

Funny that they paint a big arse red star on it though - or hammer and sickle as the case with foxtrot. :rotfl:

in real life a little red star near the sail would all that would be showing nothing like that as it "disgraces the motherlands defence"

I hope that when they put it near Midway for Exhibit will paint it more appropriately as they say in that article. Original owner painted the sickle and hammer on the sail - how bloody predictable. probably used Hollywood for the refences. ![]() |

Upon review of my pictures, I was mistaken about the hammer and sickle on the sail. It has a red star, but the H&S were on a banner advertizing the exhibit (and perhaps on a flag on the bow, it isn't clear from the pics). Anyway, nothing too outrageous on the sub itself
