Default UCGO

Did you see this one over at Dan's Orbiter Page?

This sim just keeps getting better and better.

I just can't wait for all the new addons when they start trickling in. I'm REALLY hoping that a new "World of 2001" gets made. David413 isn't going to update his "Shuttle Fleet" but he IS going to release a "Shuttle Atlantis Lite" for Orbiter 2010. He says that he intends to continue working on the "Shuttle Fleet" updates for Orbiter 2006. He says that he just doesn't have the time or desire to redo the whole thing for Orbiter 2010 which is unfortunate considering that his shuttle fleet is the most comprehensive and best space shuttle simulations that exists for Orbiter.

I'm really hoping that someone picks up the torch and makes a new Shuttle Fleet for Orbiter 2010.

That would be cool. I hadn't flown any of the shuttles from that project. Might be handy to keep the 2006 edition handy just in case I decide to try it. At this point, though, I am very happy that many of Kulch's addons are reported to work with Orbiter 2010. Just crossing my fingers and hoping that his Mir-2 also works. He added some new modules to it.

Ever run into the problem where you've been away from Orbiter long enough that you forget what all the keys do? Twice tonight I've put the ISS into a spin while trying to undock. Got it figured out to where I don't tap the hover thrust key now, though.

I play with Orbiter all the time and I STILL get the translation thrusters all screwed up usually resulting in spectacular crashes while docking, followed by a long series of expletives.

Brings back memories of the first few docking attempts. I tend to forget which mode I have the RCS set to: rotation where I need translation and vice versa.

Boosting a Mir-2 core module today to see if it works with 2010. Still have it attached to the tug and maybe thirty minutes away from circularizing orbit. If all goes well I'll have the entire station built by tomorrow.

[EDIT]

Any idea where they keep their documentation for the Lua scripting?

This page talks about the Lua manual:

http://orbiter-forum.com/project.php?issueid=276

"reference can be found in $OrbiterDir/Html/orbiter.chm under 'Orbiter Scripting User Manual'."

I didn't stop to think that the Orbiter help file might have that information. I read the CHM in the Html\Script\Stockvessels\DG folder instead and that's where I got confused. Thanks danzig.

Shuttle Fleet Beta has just been announced, for anyone that might still be following this thread.

Included in this package is an updated Shuttle Training Aircraft. The only key changes are Shift+X in place of CTRL+X and Shift+Z will now shift the view to the ODS view and toggle the COAS overlay as well. Please post bug reports to this thread. There is currently no RPOP_MFD or GPCMFD yet developed for this version of the fleet.

Woot, this got me back into orbiter... got the XR-5 Installed + the various required mods, decided to see if I could remember how to dock with the ISS...

After a few skims through a couple tutorials to re-get my bearings...

BOO-YAH.

^^ Sweet! Those XR-series birds make up a pretty fleet.

My current project:

Station Building

Phase 1 of the hastily planned ORP-SSO orbital research platform. TRANZITUG-SSO, a Tranzit space tug built by Kulchitsky Aerospace, has been boosted into a sun-synchronous orbit nearly 1,000 km above the Earth's surface. The tug is equipped with a static ventral mount RMS, and will provide initial station keeping through subsequent deliveries of the TRANZITACS 1 and 2 platform orientation modules.

The Gulf Coast is settling into bed as TRANZITUG rides the terminator over Mexico.

Launch Vehicle: HLLV ENERGIA-SSOP1
Booster Stage: DM2 tug

Default Concept

Sorry to spam the thread (is there anyone still reading this thread? I'm getting lonely here ). Putting together a concept of how I want the station to turn out. Once I get that done I can dismantle the whole thing and begin launching it piece by piece.

The nice thing about those station modules (found at the Francophone site) is that they are aligned, allowing the Tranzit tugs to be docked at each end to provide mutual orientation control. This allows for a conservative fuel consumption, keeps the main truss square with terra firma, and provides a stable platform for the solar panels. I might even be able to boost the whole thing to a higher orbit if the completed structure is well balanced.

That is cool, I totally wanted to try building a station at some point, I still need to figure out re-entry though.

Reentry is a snap once you get it down pat. I sometimes forget the basics, though, and provide for many "Ooo's" and "Ahh's" as my spaceplane breaks apart and burns up.

Still flying the Ravenstar?

I love this new version, the loading at start is much quicker, the new map MFD is plain awesome in comparison the one from Orbiter 2006P1.

And the level11/14 Earth texture is amazing, that's the 1st one in which i have Florida blending that nicely with the rest of the world instead of sticking out because it was much more detailled than the planet.

I had plenty of fun with the 1st challenge, getting from KCS to ISS with as fewer fuel as possible. But i always get most of my fun doing whatever i want in this sandbox the size of the solar system.

I have not yet tried a re-entry in Orbiter 2010, that's my weakest point, as i only succeeded very few time in actually getting exactly where i wanted. Often having to fly a thousand of kilometer to reach the landing point i was originally aiming to.

With the DGIV and Aerobrake/BaseSync it was easier, but with the stock DG that's always difficult for me to make a precise re-entry.
I have made one good re-entry with the XR2, but it was on Wideawake (my favorite earth base addon), not on KCS.

Any must-have addons for this new Orbiter version you can't fly without guys ?

Personnally, i always need the following to feel Orbiter 2010 complete :

OrbiterSound 3.5
adds all those great sounds to Orbiter that add a very lot to the immersion.

Universal Cars and Cargos 2.0
The huge arrow ship is just plain amazing, the virtual cockpit helps a lot, and the vehicles support this addon put into Orbiter is great.

DeltaGliderIV-2
The DGIV was the most advanced, feature-wise, Orbiter ship for a long time, the only weak point i can see is the lack of a virtual cockpit (a VC adds so much to the feel of "being there" even if it is not an interactive one) , but it remains a must.

(both DG-IV and Universal Cars/Cargo contains the full version of UMMU 2.0 so no need to download the standalone version of it, UMMU is another needed feature when you want to go take a walk in space out of a ship)

Wideawake International
For me the best launching/landing Earth base ever, i love that island scenery.

Luna-OB1 replacement
As i like to go in the moon orbit, i visit often the station Luna, but i found its visual lacking.
This replacement transform it into a much nicer space station.

XR-2 Ravenstar
My now favorite space ship.
The visual is extremely impressive by its quality and polishing, the virtual cockpit, though lacking the interactivity of the default Deltaglider one, is a nice touch for immersing yourself into piloting this great ship.

There are some needed MFD too, like Aerobrake/Basesync for the re-entries but can't recommend them yet as i am not sure they are fully compatible with Orbiter 2010, i have read some reports about them crashing.

I think that's the strict minimum addons i need to enjoy completely Orbiter.
