Restart if attacked!?

After spending out all torpedoes, destroyed escort, I move in with a surface gun, everything is nice until merchants start firing at me with their pathetic guns, at the same moment as some of them fire the shell at me (it didn't even flew at me) my computer restarts ! WTF!
It is not top end machine 2 GB of RAM, Intel Dual core 2,56 Ghz and ATI HD 3660... wht is going on? Is this some stupid bug? The latest drivers ofcourse.

I don't know much about what makes things crash, but I do know that I've had SH3 crash on me in the early days when something graphic came up too fast and my computer couldn't handle it. On the other hand I've never had it crash due to that problem when playing SH4. Since SH4 was redesigned to handle graphics better, I assume SH5 should be the same or even more so.

On the other hand I also had some crashes back when because of a missing or corrupted sound file. Either of those could be the problem, or something else entirely. What mods are you running?

[edit] I just reread your post and you said it was a total reboot, not just a CTD. Could it have been external, like a power glitch? Normally something in the game doesn't shut down the entire computer, just the game itself.

What was the temp on your GPU.. i'd say 99% during your long attack run your card was heating up... and then when the surface battle began your card shut things down to save itself from being incenirated by SH5. I AM runing a top end machine and I've had to do ALOT to keep my ATI card crom melting on ShS.

SH5 is very poorly optimized honestly, and it just doesn't run well with ATI cards. Try Down clocking... I believe Sober or somebody mentioned that I did it and got very little difference but since then have gone to a liquid cooled case and have been able to keep my overclocked 5870 at around 70C.

I had that problem once, not with the GPU, but with the CPU overheating.

I downloaded SpeedFan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Once I had watched it for a while to an idea of fan speeds and temps, then I start playing some of the more high end(powerwise) games. I noticed that the Temp on the CPU really climbed.

Turned out to be the cooling fan on the CPU had taken a dump. It wasn't dead but the RPMs were low (1000 instead of 5000). Replaced the fan and all was fine.
