To put it in a nutshell lots of toil and basically a seperate 'mirror' section of the forums / website with different formatting. They probably have some applet to convert from one to another.

You can check what drudge has done for a 'phone friendly' version of his website.

Frankly I dont think its worth the effort. As others have said if you want to access the forums via a mobile device it can be done.

I was thinking of a layout like the one for gmail or youtube so you don't have to keep scrolling around to see everything

I just skip straight to the forums, and keep it bookmarked. Then again I've got a touchscreen so browsing might be easier than a normal phone
