Editing controllers with S3D?

I've been trying to jury-rig some of the controller files included in the S3D folder, but every time I try to make any changes at all, I get compile errors when I try to start S3D again to put my changes to the test. I know that those files are provided "as is - change at your own risk", but I really need some guidance on how to get my changes to stick so I can at least test them.

Do I need to make changes to some sort of index file so that S3D will allow the changes? Or are there any other files / options / settings I need to take into account when changing these things?

Any help here would be appreciated.
