[REL] Draft Fix for all ships

README:

This mod is JSGME ready. It calibrates all ship draught values so that their water line now matches water surface on 0 m/s winds perfectly. The ship draught values were tested on clean install of Silent Hunter 4 with only the following mods: RFB2.0 (Patch 23April2010) with RSRDCv575 (V5xx_Patch1). I have included few BEFORE & AFTER screenshots from this testing to show you how much some ships have been sitting too deep or too high. This might not be so obvious in stock game, but with much calmer seas in RE included with RFB this becomes very noticeable. There are two versions of this mod, each compatible with:
  • RFB2.0 (Patch 23April2010) + RSRDCv575 (V5xx_Patch1)
  • Game Fixes Only Mod v1.1

I haven’t tested this on RFB2.0 alone install, but I do believe it should work without any problems as RSRDC mainly adds more ships and changes campaign game play. This mod can easily be incorporated into any other super mod – for this purpose I have written down draught changes for every ship in the game (and ones added by RSRDC).

Every ship in game has received the correct draught change except two ships that have received deliberate dunking. Those ships are KingGeorgeV class BB and Deutchland class CA. When you look at their pictures from WW2 it is clear that they are sitting too high in water. Unfortunately, their waterline will now be blow the water surface. Until someone can re-skin them correctly this is the only solution. If you don’t like the changes to those two ships simply delete folders NBB_KGeorgeV and NCA_Deutschland from the Draft Fix/Data/Sea folder. They have the correct draught and don’t need to be corrected else way.

The procedure for editing ship’s draft is very simple. Open the .sim file of the desired vessel and simply edit the following line unit_Ship/obj_Hydro/Surfaced/draught= to the correct value from SH4 Draft Fix - correct draught values for all ships by TH0R excel file included with this mod. To save you from messing things up, it is best to create a new JSGME ready mod and copy the .sim files of the ships you would like to edit to the according ship / submarine folder and make the desired changes there. After you’re done – just enable the mod with JSGME and you are good to go.

NOTE: Because this was tested on RFB with RSRDC, few ships have different correct draught values in stock and moded game: Javelin and V&W class DD’s and Fiji class CL. Reason for this probably lies in moded .sim files of each ship in question. I have included the correct draught values for both RFB and GFO.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: Enable with JSGME after RFB/RSRDC or GFOv1.1 mods have been installed, depending on the version.
You have my full permission to use this in any mod you want, as this is basically a fix not a mod. Just give me credit for finding the correct values.

Great job Thor! This should have been included in the RFB patch. Mabey next time.

Thanks.

A part of it is included. The following subs have received a draft adjustment: Porpoise, Gato, Balao and Tench.

since the subs in the game are not correctly aligned on its axis and float "level" or flat and the decks are not properly sitting at an upward angle as they were in real life and their painted waterlines show, how did you choose the correct place to put them since you will always be too high at the stern or too low at the bow?

I am glad you asked me that question.

The values I recommended to Luke are merely +0,1 changes to the Gato, Balao and Tench boats with the exception to the Porpoise which received -0,4 compared to the previous RFB draft value.

Balao/Tench and Gato/Tambor/Gar are more or less accurately aligned longitudinal axis wise, so it was very easy to find the most accurate draft setting. With Porpoise it is a different case, just as you mention it - if we set it to the water line its stern will be too high, and stern tubes will stand out of the water. This is the only difference between GFOv1.1 and RFB/RSRDC versions of my mods - I have set porpoise to match the water line in GFO (draught value 5,1) version and with RFB I've set it to match the top of the stern tubes 5 & 6 (draught value 5,4) which when you look at the boats bow port holes matches the WW2 pictures almost perfectly. The reason why I did it this way - in stock environment /sea it is more difficult to spot accurate values, even on 0 m/s winds, compared to RFB's RE where flat seas are really flat and any deviation of the draught value becomes apparent.

Values of all other subs in GFO mod are from RFB, as you can see in the excel file I wrote.

The basis of my calibration were bow port holes. I have calibrated the boats so that the water surface matches their lower end or in line with the much smaller portholes located just in between the bow port holes and torpedo tubes 1 & 2. After studying many WWII pictures (mostly those pictures when boats were sailing of on their patrol, in port and on calm, flat seas) and many documentaries - I have seen that this was the most common case how they were trimmed. They were probably trimmed even deeper when in combat area to shave off few seconds of the dive times, but they definitely weren't sitting as high as in stock game - which best resembles today's museum examples where boats aren't loaded with torpedoes, provisions and crew.
