Default What a terrible way to go...

The year is mid 1942. I'm leaving St. Nazaire in my IXC for a new patrol. About 300 km northwest of St. Nazaire I catch a small merchant on the surface - in good weather. I fire from a distance of 3 km at it with my deck gun.

Suddenly, my spotter announces an incoming A/C. It's a lone Sunderland. The merchant is almost sunk, so I order my FLAK crew to the guns.

They shoot down the Sunderland. Problem solved - or so I thought.

The Sunderland crashes directly into my deck gun and crew. The guys there were killed instantly. Watch tower fully destroyed with the spotter, all FLAK crew killed, heavy damage and flooding in the forward compartment (all crew members there dead), radio and sonar crew dead. My damage control team didn't have a chance to fix anything. My boat was gone.

What a way to end a successful career.

Not to seem unsympathetic but am I to understand that you shot down a friendly aircraft just so that you can get the credit for killing a small merchant??

If so my friend that is poetic justice and you got what you deserve! I as well would have crashed my burning plane right in your conning tower had I been the one in the cockpit.

Good for him and you should not better then to shoot at friendlies

Sunderlands are definitely NOT friendly

Oh yeah cawimmer430, forgot to say.
You're right, that sucks.
Managing to kill the Sunderland, then getting sunk by the crashing plane.
My condolences.

He didn't say anything about it being friendly.

My mistake then I misread what was written. I know there is no love lost between the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe but I am glad to see that we are not causing their demise.

At that stage of the war, you took a big chance using your deck gun.
Especialy in the bay, with a very vulnerable IXC.
This time it just didn't pan out well for you, or your crew.
Dissapointment yes. Surprise no.

Another negative about using your deck gun is that you are definately DETECTED, which has long term effects on your relationship with aircraft.

Hi guys,

Yep, it was a big blow. Up until then I had been doing great and I got sunk by a freak accident - literally. Oh well, I need a break from SH3 anyway. I'm so busy with schoolwork these days I only get to play the game on the weekends.

I knew the deck gun was risky business, but I didn't want to sink this merchant with a valuable torpedo. Besides, I didn't expect any enemy air activity in the region either. And I really thought I could deal with an enemy A/C that suddenly appeared, at least long enough to sink the merchant and then dive away to safety.

By the way, does anyone know how I can reset the order to dive to periscope depth at the very sighting of an aircraft? I set this as the standard order but I would like to give the order myself now. Anyone know how I can do it?

I've searched Google and used the search function here but I can't find any information.

Thanks.
