Default TDC vs Periscope

I am another n00b to the game.

I played SH4 for a couple of years but at 0% realism. Bought SH3 a month ago and went striaght for GWX and trying it out at 78% realism. It makes the experience totally different!

But after reading the TDC walkthroughs I am hitting 80% of the time. Is the periscope worth using since I am getting such good results?

The periscope is ESSENTIAL because how are you going to see what you want to torpedo when submerged? You need to use it to gather speed, AOB and range estimates also (when submerged)

If you aren't using the periscope how are you making solutions? The UZO?
Once I used the hydrophones to take a shot but that was because I was below periscope depth and firing at another sub

I also recommend OLC GUI (a Periscope mod, lets you tell range/AOB/Speed with periscope easier) GWX3 (Makes the game as close to real as it can get) and Commander (Does all kinds of cool things, like randomize crush depth, career details, time compression changes etc.)

I have been setting myself up at 90deg to the contact's course so AoB is easy but I am yet to try different angles.
I use the periscope to find the ships and to get courses, then sit and wait. I get the speed from the 3min 15 rule.

All of that took me about an hour to get right! Was putting AoB on the TDc from my sub to the target!

Also all my shots have been at 700m or less.

I still have a lot to learn

What I meant was I have had no luck getting AoB and speed etc from using the periscope. But the other way takes time, at least 4 mins and sometimes over 10 mins and only works while they stay on course.

Is there a good tutorial on using the periscope?

With the OLC GUI mod i'm using I can get speed, AOB, and range accuratly in 1 min. or less

also if you don't have GWX3 (as it comes with a mod packer called JSGME) here

OLC rocks! Not only is there the periscope "wheel" there is a course solving wheel you can toggle from the TDC.

You can attack ships blind, but it takes a hell of a lot of skill and experience to even contemplate such an action!
Useful in rough seas and you want to maintain stealth and not attack surfaced.

You have to use something to target with and feed bearing data to the TDC - either you use the periscope or UZO optics.

You might want to try the Fixed Wire method of attack. It makes range calculations unnecessary.

1) Sail your sub so that your heading 000 is just in front of the target ship track. Set your scope bearing to 000.

2) As the bow of the target ship crosses your vertical reticule, start the stopwatch. As the stern of the ship crosses your vertical reticule, stop the stopwatch.

3) Identify the ship in the recognition manual to determine target ship length.

4) Calculate target speed using this formula:

(ship length in meters * 1.94) / time in seconds

5) Turn sub to intercept target ship track at 90 degrees.

6) Go to TDC. Turn on TDC manual input. Set AoB to either 90 degrees port or starboard. Dial in target speed. Turn off manual input.

7) Go to scope and turn it until gyro angle reads 000.

8) Go back to TDC, turn on manual entry, and tweak AoB back to 90. Turn off manual entry.

9) Go back to scope and tweak to 000 gyro angle. Open tube doors for firing.

10) When target ship crosses crosshairs, fire torpedoes as the parts of the ship you want to hit cross the vertical reticule.
