Default Type VIIC Uboat found in the Bergen-fjord

U-1053 has been located at a depth of 340 meters just outside Bergen (throwing range from my house) in the fjord. It sank during a diving exercise in 1945. We know it sunk in the area but it has never been located untill now. Cool huh?

Norwegian newspaper. Translate with Google or ask me.

Isn't that old news?

Look here

Quote:
U-1053 was a German submarine Type V11C. She was sunk on the 15th February 1945 in the North Sea in the Byfjord north-west of Bergen, Norway in position 60.24N, 05.13E, after an accident during a deep diving trial. 45 dead (all hands lost). There were apparently some workers from the yard in Bergen (Norwegian personnel?) on board when the boat sank, they perished as well. The wreck of this boat was located in 1997.

Perhaps the wreck location previously cited was that of another?

Perhaps it has been told on this forum before but I read about it in the newspaper a few days ago.

I don't know about such post.
The article I was quoting states it was discovered in 1997.

Maybe they discovered it then but didn't manage it to find it back until recently.

Or the web site is in error, another entirely plausible possibility.

I don't know what to believe. Maybe the people in the know kept it a secret? Being a sea grave and all, right outside Bergen.

I wouldn't trust anything in the Norwegian newspapers. Hm, or simply take it all with a grain of salt as one say. Online newspapers are apparantly written by morons sometimes, and imo one can't really trust information from people in the government either.

Also, when I read this article the other day, it was stated that no positive confirmation has yet been made, but the wreck they found is believed to be the U-1053.

340 meters of cold water

It's probably in a better state than the wrecks in shallow waters.

Too bad, if it sanks with all hands, it's considered as a war grave so it cannot be salvaged or sliced for souvenirs.

I entered the coordinates in google maps, and the position ended up on land. Maybe I did it wrong?

I also tried to find the location on the map, using several mentioned coordinates in several articles, but none of them are even near the Byfjord north-west of Bergen.

Uboat.net isn't helping either.
