Call me any funny name you want, but after switching back and forth between stock and existing UI mods, i have finally conceded to myself, that sometimes change is good, and i really like the minimalist UI that comes with the game.
However, it's most glaring oversight is the lack of a compass or rudder controls. If someone could add at least those, and maybe expand on other missing functionalty later on, i think it would create an awesome UI choice for the community. (I for one would be very grateful) |

Or you could have the best of both worlds with some sort of "pop out" menu system that remains hidden most of the time.
There needs to be a way to access detailed commands that otherwise aren't usable in SH5. |

I would like to work with the new UI as well. It is effective and works well. In short, I like it a lot. It does however need at least two addtions IMO.
1. Depth to keel 2. Return to course. 3. Compass However, the compass could be a usuable compass within the sub interior or added to pop up with the navigation map when activated. Thats it. I'm good with the TDC and everything else about it. Besides, if we go back to the older style we have basically removed that first person type roll and become the I Dream of Genie blinking from place to place. SH5 is not about that type of play IMO. I kind dig having to walk here and there. It has slowed down how I used to play SH. IMO it has made the game better in that respect.

I have no problem with the minimalist approach in theory as it does fit the new direction rather well. However the vanilla implementation to me is flawed in two ways. Note I said vanilla, modders are improving it all the time.
1. It's too modern looking. No need for further comment as we've hashed through this ad naseum. 2. Choice of elements displayed. If you're going to pare down the amount of UI elements visible to the player, concentrate on only showing the critical elements. Perhaps have others as a slideout. In fact, ideally almost all elements would be slideouts, as any kind of HUD detracts from the great new fps perspective and eye-candy. Two glaring examples: That ghastly bright orange exclamation mark to indicate the current mission, and the TC controls. Who in the hell clicks on those controls to scale down to 1x from 8192x??? |

TheDarkWraith's 3 Dials is coming close. It gives us the missing commands for moving the boat while retaining some of the new UI look and cleanliness.

Dont know if somebody else has already figured out these but anyways
Been tinkering with Page Default Hud script and so far has managed to enable heading gauge and orders bar. Heading gauge is kinda small and as far as i know, it isnt interactive. Been thinking about possibly making it interactive and making it a bit wider so we might have relatively decent way to change heading via UI while keeping the stock UI look Another thing is orders bar. It could be used the same way as officer icons in SH3 ![]() |
