Lots of testing.

I set up a test mission with the Mark 14, and I used the above-listed dud settings. Result: the torpedoes explode every time without fail. When I set the dud rate for entry 0 to 100 percent, the torpedoes will fail to explode every time. I will re-run my tests again, but I'm almost certain my conclusions are correct.

The Osprey book on the Type VII mentions it, along with David Miller's U-Boats: The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep.
