Oh, sure, there may have been a few other countries, but they don't Really count. The French and British were just there to give the Germans something to do until the US showed up in WWI. The British also kept the Germans entertained for a bit while we were getting ourselves ready to come over there and rescue everybody in Europe. (I think I heard that the Russians had some little border skirmish with the Germans, but I'm not sure about that.) I mean, we're America. We single-handedly cleaned up the Germans in Europe, while also taking care of the Japanese in the Pacific. As for Korea, I think there might have been a few other countries involved, but they never made it into our movies, so once again, they don't count.

(Yes, I'm being sarcastic, and wishing more people would turn off the TV and read a book.)

I remember at some point, when I was still quite young, being suprised to find out that WWII didn't start when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

My father always said that he'd never forget the day he arrived in the town where he settled down as a young man (and where I was born many years later). The first thing he did when he got off the train was buy a newspaper. The headline said "HITLER INVADES POLAND." Not the kind of thing you're likely to forget!

Of course I knew who Hitler was and about the "war in Europe" and knew what "D-Day" was. But I was taken aback when I realized that the newspaper headline he was talking about was from Sep 1939, lol. It just never occurred to me that there had been much of a war going on until the USA was in it - because the emphasis from popular media was always on the part of the war the USA fought, and that's it. This was before I was far enough along in school to have been taught about such things in history class, but TBH I don't think they did much better there. At least it got mentioned, but sadly we never seemed to have enough time to get as in-depth about anything as I would have liked. That I always just did on my own.

Subtle.

Could someone please direct me to the Easter Egg thread? I've gotten lost in the shuffle here somewhere.

I think it started with this:

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/victories.html

Then there's the whole WW2 capitulation in 1940, which pissed off most brits, although many forget that it was the valiant sacrifice of the French army that allowed for the evacuation of the Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk. Also most forget that it was the French who were the most successful and feared soldiers in WW1. And then there's the Foreign Legion which make the Seals look like paintball players.

But hey, even I make friendly fun of them. Here's one for you:

Doenitz and Ho Chi Min walk into a french bar.
The barman takes a look at them and says: "I surrender!"

The Foreign Legion does not make the SEALS look like paintball players, that is ridiculous in the extreme. No one makes the SEALS look like paintball players!

+1 sort of, I know a Seal that would beg to differ.

But historicaly thier not %100 French.
France pretty much hired mercenaries from other countries and gave their convicts the option to join as long as they would leave the country, and called it the Foreign Legion.

But yes, they are hardcore.

And remember that Japan had actually been at war since June 1937 so the Pacific Theatre actaully started then. Depending on whether you count Hitler's annexations of Austria and Czechoslovakia as undeclared hostilities the European Theatre actually started in March 1938, whilst the African Theatre kicked off as early as 1934 with the Italian invasion of the Ethopian Empire.

It would depend on the era of the FFL you are comparing today's seals against. The bad old days of African and Middle Eastern Occupations prior to WWII was a tough as it comes in terms of living conditions. Todays SEALS get it relatively easy by comparison. Try reading With the Foreign Legion in Syria by John Harvey to see why. No firkkin ice cream machines for those boys.

Wow you guys do watch to much movies if you think the seals are our elite of the elite. I fully agree that us americans have a very single minded view point of history, but thats history its written by the winners, and to be honest it was Russia who won world war two, they defeated germany period.

I bet we could call some bugs easter eggs if we wake up on the optimistic side of the bed. Perhaps the cook will serve up oister eggs by 1 of April, which he hatches on the sunny side of the hull.

Nah, I would be a bit angry to find easter eggs while we have this many bugs from the get-go, but it'll put a brief smile on my I guess.

Btw: the french foreign legion relies on beatings to force discipline, partly because the raw recruits in some sence consists of the scum of the earth (often foreign outcasts and small time criminals) and partly because they do not even speak french at the get go. Many consider it THE test of manlyhood.

Perhaps we should delete all non-easter-comments, historical and such.
