Default Difference between attack and obs scope?

Why would you use one over the other when targetting?

From what i can tell the only differences are...

1. Attack scope goes alittle higher and you can lower it all the way while still looking through it.
2. Obs scope has more freedom vertically.

Other than that, i see no other difference. I thought the attack scope was supposed to have slightly better zoom?

The head on the attack scope is smaller and harder to spot on the surface, it should also have a higher magnification.

The observation scope should work better in low light because of the larger head, it has slightly less magnification and is able to turn up higher to search for aircraft before you surface.

Edit: sorry should have read your post closer. I haven't ran back and forth between the two scopes to check the zoom, is it the same?

No, in real life they had the same magnification, 1.5x and 6x.

Other than that your notes are correct. The obs scope was sometimes referred to as the 'Sky' periscope, because it could be cranked up high enough to look for airplanes.

To reiterate:

Obs scope: Better in bad light, bigger and easier to see. In the control room for easy accessability.

Attack scope: Smaller for harder detection, had a seat (at least the German ones).

Oh, ok. I guess the 6x for attack and 4x for Obs were a "game" thing in the older SH games.

Yep. I didn't know about it either until Hitman started doing a whole lot of research.

On the other hand SH1 let you do 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x in both periscope and TBT (UZO). I believed them too.

I believe the obs scope in the old SH games was 1.0x instead of 1.5x as well.

I'm guessing the "better in bad light" is not modeled.

You can't even use it to shoot torpedo's as far as the game is concerned. It lacks the notepad and stuff. So, it's pretty much a useless feature in SH3, as far as I can tell. (edit: oops, didn't realize this wasn't the SH3 forum, until after I posted.)

I made the magnification on it go up to 20x for a bit easier flag identification, though. Not that it's really useful for that either... sub bobs up and down so much it's still hard to see anything.

I just installed that flag enlightment mod, though. Still haven't seen what the flags look like with the mod. Heh, I had installed it but the directory stucture was wrong, so it didn't really install. Real funny thing is, I thought it was working. A placebo effect on my part. Wasn't till later that I noticed that the directory structure for the mod was wrong... to where that mod installer wasn't really installing the mod.

I may put the magnification back to default for it, if the flags are readable, now....or not.

If it's anything like SH3 and SH4 then submerged moonless periscope attacks are easy with either.

By the way, to get the obs scope all the way down, just go to the attack scope, look though it, and press the page down button...and ta da the obs scope will go down finally. I dunno why you cant get it to lower all the way while using it...but the only time i can get it to lower is when using the attack scope.

Or you can just push Shift+PGDN while not looking into it to make it go down.

LOL.

Also Shift+ins/del makes the attack go down all the way without holding it.

Ive never tried that method...i just figured like this game..the Uboat is glitchy as hell and required unconventional methods to get it to work correctly. Hell the crew is on crack or something they like to jump around all over the place.

Maybe its just me, but maybe a submarine isnt a good place for a bunch of scitzoid depressives like these guys seem to be, herking and jerking around...deciding to talk to me upside down or sideways, or hell just decided theyre done talking to me. Or even worse they will decide they forgot to talk to me and say they want to talk to me via that icon..yet all the options will be the exact same. And everytime i reload they all get depressed they have to go back to work or something..

TMO attack scope is useless at night, night scope works on moonlit night.maybe someone could make it so for SH 5

They were both 1.5/6.0x it turns out, but yeah the sight etching pattern was different.
