Default 84 year old Vet. recalls WW2 battles

An engaging interview with a living survivor with first hand accounts.

Starts out with

Quote:
GALESBURG —
Howard Benthine was not even 19 years old when he killed another man for the first time.

“I grabbed him by his head and snapped his neck,” the 84-year-old said. “You know, you live or you die.

“It was him or me. I did what I was trained to do.”
ends with

Quote:
Benthine faces cancer with the same attitude with which he faced war.
“We’ve had a hell of a good life. An outstanding life.”

No they're not. I have two students fresh from the Afghan battlefields and both of them are barely into their 20's.

He reminds me in some ways of my father.

That generation are ageing fast.
