Default Deadliest Catch - RIP Cpt.Phil

Great Series and a Great Captain.

Captain Phil Harris -- star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" -- died about an hour ago ... sources tell TMZ.

Harris was hospitalized a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke while unloading crabs. He had been doing better until the sudden turn.

Captain Harris died in a hospital in Alaska. He was 53.

Harris' kids, Jake and Josh, tell TMZ, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."

This really is a shame. I haven't watched the show in a couple years, but when I did watch it Phil and the Cornelia Marie was my favorite boat to watch. Smoking, eating poorly, and drinking lots of Red Bull was bound to catch up with him.

*Hail Mary*

Sooner or later even the strongest of men succumb. I loved the back-and-forth between Capt. Harris and his boys, his gravelly voice, and the constant air of tension that perhaps belied the truth of his profession and way of life.

He was definitely one of the more interesting captains to watch, but I can't say that I'm completely surprised. I don't think that I saw a single shot of him without a cigarette...those things will kill you. Still, my condolences go out to the family.

Yeah, he was having some issues with his health. Lung problems i think. He was at the hospital one day with the lung problem smoking! I hope his two sons can carry on.

Cigarettes did to him what the stormy Bering Sea couldn't. A shame.

I never watched the show. But I have sympathy for his family's loss.

Judging from some of the posts here, Phil made some life style choices that caught up with him. I hope he lived the life he wanted.

I hope so too. Only person that could say for sure would have been Phil himself. But, I figure he probably did live a full life despite the unhealthy habits. He did get to watch his two sons grow up, and lived long enough to pass his heritage on down to them... not to mention becoming TV star of sorts. Bound to be worth something in the grand scheme of one's life.

I don't know how many seasons ago it was, maybe two yeas ago? Capt. Phil was resting in his bunk when the CM took a big wave. He got knocked out of his bunk and slammed into some furniture, hurt his ribs pretty bad. He kept on skippering despite coughing up blood the whole time. Whole fleet worried about him so much they finally convinced him to go ashore for medical. That's when he learned he had cancer, IIRC.

EDIT: Someone posted a short tribute to Capt. Harris, over on YouTube. Here's the link for anyone interested:
