FYI most new Ubisoft games, including Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers 7, have iPhone versions.

You know its interesting - We all expect progress and improvement in successive games of a given series - so if you accept that Silent Hunter 3 was a simulation, how the hell can you say Silent Hunter 5 is a viable progression becuase you sure as hell couldnt play Sh3 on your Iphone theres just too much in the game, too much detail, too much history, too much challenge
Yup this single admission should be enough to warn the serious SubSimmer well away from ........you know what - Please note I didnt even mention the unmentionable item that begins with D By the way - why do folks keep trying to flog PT Boats - you will notice not one serious thread here at SubSim devoted to it other than to say rude things about it - who writes these reviews anyway By the way I bought a copy of PT Boats in case any one thinks I just like slagging things off for the fun of it Best Regards R Quote:

IPhone Silent Hunter is done by a separate dev team. Its not the same game. The subject matter is the same, but then, so is the one in AOD.

Ubi will now have your iTunes password, and require "Allow location services" seemingly, to give your subs location in the iPhone game--but instead, no apps will work unless connected to ubi's new worldwide wifi--service, which the apps will kindly direct you to the nearest location, based on your current coordinates. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Seriously--it's ridiculous, and simply does not follow, that because there is an iPhone release for the game, that that means the sim itself will be simple, arcadish, etc. It will be a neat little app to check out when on the poop deck. Maybe it'll be a little addictive, and sell a few copies of the actual PC sim, to others, who would have never even considered it.

What, really?
Nobody has an iPhone and noticed the complete lack of decent naval games on them? It's not like this is a replacement for the PC game or anything - just something to play while waiting for planes at an airport or somesuch. All it has to do is be evocative, fun, and thematically correct - and it'll be just what *I'm* looking for, anyway. |

D'you think the phone will vibrate during depth charging?
One of these days I mean to make the crash dive alarm segment from Das Boot into a ring tone. |

For those of you who think Silent Hunter iPhone could be to "arcadish" I recommend to take a look at the upcoming iPhone U-Boat Simulation "WOTA - Wolves of the Atlantic"

Well, I bought the iPhone version last night and I can honestly say that I'm quite surprised. It's like Sid Meier should create a Silent Hunter version of the Pirates! game (the newest one, not the old one).
Anyway, for those of you who want a mini review: You start out on a world map which you can zoom in and out on as well as pan it around. You give waypoints to your little sub by double-tapping. After you've found an enemy contact, you tap on it to engage and that brings you into the real 3D "sim". You see your sub from behind and change heading by tilting the iPhone. Speed and depth are on either side of the screen and you change them by either tapping them or dragging a little slider up and down. The graphics in this section is actually quite nice. You can even pan around your submarine by sliding your finger across the screen. Anyway, back to the action! When you spotted the convoy, or single ship, that you engaged you have two choices: Go to periscope depth and torpedoe them or stay on the surface and deck gun them. This is where everything gets arcade'ish, but still proper fun! The torpedo attack: You stare out of your periscope at the various ships you've found and you have to manually line up your periscope where you think your torpedo will intersect the course of the target. You get a little identifier card on the top right corner that states the name and distance of your target, but no speed indication etc. After you think you have the right bearing then it's just to hit the FIRE button and let the torps away. You can fire 4 at a time and they reload pretty quick (you also get 50 of them...) so you easily can sink that convoy you spotted. The deck gun attack: In this section you need to line up your deck gun with the target. Whereas in the torpedo attack, where the sub went wherever the periscope was pointing, in this part your sub continues in the direction you set before you entered the deck gun section which I found was a nice little detail. In order to hit your target you need to line it up, then hold the firebutton until a little arrow shows that the shell will hit the ship, and then you release the button to actually fire the shell. One thing I wish they removed from this part is the fact that when you sink a ship they drop... a powerup. Be it torpedoes, deck gun shells, or a health-kit. There are escorts as well as freighters to sink but they haven't been much of a problem to me yet. After you've done with the sinking you can choose to continue hunting the waters or go back to homeport to upgrade your sub or equipment. There are only three subs in the game (VIII, IX and one I can't remember at the moment) as well as only three torp upgrades and three AA upgrades. Also, the game features a neat campaign with a great intro. Haven't played far enough to see if every part has this to describe what happens but overall the whole game oozes quality. (except when it comes to the music. It is the SH music allright but it seems ripped from SH4 instead if 5...?) Err.. I think that was all. Will be playing a bit more today to see if I missed any more features etc but overall the game is worth the introductionary price of... two bucks! Go get it! No DRM! ![]() |
