Default Subsim IRC channel?

Hello all.

I recently got back on IRC and tried visiting some of the old subsim channels, but they were empty. No signs of anyone at all.

I remember that several years ago they were very active, due in part perhaps to the fact that they were a meeting ground for MP match-ups with SHII and SC. Nevertheless, there was plenty more going on besides game planning. We had a whole group of regulars and it was, dare I say, fun to some degree.

Is anyone else interested in reviving these old channels?

PS: For those of you who are unaware of what IRC is I will try to explain it as simply as I can. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It is a very old method for chatting on the Internet. Generally, you would you would use an IRC client to connect to an IRC server, and then "join" channels, or "chat rooms" on that server.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with all this, you can access these servers and channels by clicking on the "chat" link on the main subsim.com side menu. Further instructions followed on the link.

I could be conned into that. I really enjoyed some of those late-night parties.

Come to think of it, I might even consider loading up DC and SH2 again, just to duke it out with friendly enemies.

Many people often use TeamSpeak for text and voice comms these days.

True that. But IRC does have it's advantages, easier and faster to write if one doesnt have a mic, it's on 24/7 and it's less hassle to get up and running for those not so familiar with PCs. Ow and everyone can get on, no need to tamper around with firewalls etc.

Agreed, I use for a certain forum down under, but the bloody multi coloured text plays havoc with my eyes

I always liked it too. Think I've still got mIRC around here somewhere from the old days, altho not installed on this machine cuz none of the groups I chat with these days use it.

Well then. For those who are interested, I will be visiting #subsim on irc.mindforge.org from time to time these days. Maybe we can get this thing jump-started.

I tried it and I get the page saying there will be a popup so I set my blocker to allow popups for subsim.com, but when I 'click to proceed' I get a page with a big outlined block that looks like there should be chat happening there but there's just that little 'x' up in the corner which means something that should be loading there isn't.

Do I need to install my old mIRC program on this computer to make it work?

You may want to check that you have Java setup properly, as it is a Java applet.

Personally, I prefer to use a standalone client such as mIRC, or in my case Xchat, being that I am on Linux. If you are familar with mIRC I would suggest it over the web-based Java applet.

Argh, I can remember when Java issues screwed unmercifully with the old chats we used to have at one of my Yahoogroups. Would rather not deal with that again.

If I install my mIRC client, how do I access subsim's irc chats from there? Still through the website, or just open the client program and go to one of the designated channels? I haven't used it in ages.

Stick with good old Cleverbot.
It's a whole lot simpler.

You can access the chat room by issueing the following commands into the prompt:

/server irc.mindforge.org
/join #subsim

Make sure to fill out the user information boxes in mIRC, or these commands will fail. IE: Nick, alternate Nick, email, etc.

I'm not even close to being drunk enough to fall for that.

Thanks, will give it a try when I can get the client installed again.
