Default question about the damage model...

I know you can hit a ship and detonate its cargo if its the right type,(I'm still wondering why most tankers are loaded with freight in the stock game LOL) but will a direct hit to the DC Racks detonate them? I have tried a few times but the DD's guns either kill me or force me under before i can line up a good shot. Anyone know?

Not to sure about the DC racks, don't like getting that close, but I think amidships where the torpedoes are will make a nice explosion.

yes, if you hit the racks they blow but dont forget they have the y-gun racks too that fire out to the sides you have to worry about

in almost all cases you lose against a DD because they out gun you and can put out 4 or 5 shelld to your 1 plus small arms cannon fire so unless you using something like my upgraded deck gun you dont have a chance against them and dive ASAP

Thanks, I was hoping the damage would be enough to destroy the DD. i would assume in real life that kind of detonation would blow the stern off of the ship, but i guess the game doesn't take into account the amount of explosives in the depth charges.

No big deal, it was just an idea. I will just stick to submerged attacks.

RL your sub would be dead way b4 you could ever land a shot on the DC racks

DD gets destroyed with 1 torp. easypeasy

You'd have to be a fool or crazy to engage a destroyer on the surface. Unless the destroyer is dead in the water and listing heavily to one side, I suggest it's better to sink them with one torp.

I one took out a Wakatake DD in TMO with deck gun, it was kind of luck.Basically, it and a small subchaser caught me in shallows of java sea and landed some hits with depth charges, was taking on water, engines gone, so decided to fight it out, surfaced fast, manned deck gun, fired right at the torpedos, they put out a huge explosion and also continued shelling at the waterline, DD landed at hit that damaged sub ever more but I was screwed anyway, well the wakatake quit firing and went dead in water, began to slowly sink.

Then the subchaser was coming from behind to ram my sub, I manned the 20 MM aft AA gun and waited until the SC was close, then began firing at the forward gun crew and deckhands, as well as at the pilot house, the SC turned away and skimmed along my starboard side at prob 20 yards or less and I continued raking the deck gun 20 MM fire, saw several crew fall down, the SC went on in a straight line and returned some minor fire but just rode off into the sunset. The DD eventually sank but I had no way to get home, but I won in a way.

This was rare exception to rule, esp in TMO, normally I wouldve been shelled to pieces by the DD, lucky hits caught it off guard.I had some screen shots i posted on here but cant find them, prob can find the old post somewhere.

With TMO hard enough fighting merchants, much less dd's. That's the way it should be. Most merchants are easy if you stay out of their gun range.

I was got in trouble with a subchaser in shallow water. He had one forward DG, so when he passed, I surfaced and used the 20 to blow his charge racks off and dived back down. He chased me to deep water, but had nothing to drop.

That's the silly thing about stock, you can go up against several dd's on the surface and win.

My install uses stock A.I. so even if they can fire 5 shots to my 1, 4 of them will miss badly. I don't make a habit of surface attacks on destroyers, but if i'm outta fish and detected in a damaged sub, i'll take my chances instead of being helpless while they pound my boat with depth charges.

The idea occured to me when i noticed just how many DCs were in the racks on the stern deck of one of the TMO destroyers. I thought if i could land a HE round on the rack it would turn there own weapons against them. We all know how much damage just a couple DCs can do to our boats, imagine 8-12 of em blowing up in the rack!

Granted the damage would not be as great because the compression of the water around the DC would not apply, but at least 1/4 of the force would be directed into the deck and stern section. If it didn't sink the DD it would at least disable it. Look what happened to the Arizona when a single bomb detonated inside the magazine, same idea but on a smaller less enclosed scale.
