Default Like to fix the Grey Wolf Minesweeper

I played the Grey Wolf addon for the first time on the weekend.
Several years ago I made the German minesweeper, Tboot and Jaguar models for Serg. Also the light cruiser.
I saw the Minesweeper and the Tboots in the sim. They look like they have major smoothing group issues. Also some of the detail could be upgraded.
If Serg isn't around I was wondering if someone could help me improve at least the Minesweeper. Which seems to be used a lot. When Serg and I did them I was only using Gmax.
Now I have Max 2010. This means the export is easier and should help this issue.
I need some one that can add the details like guns and weapons etc. Then get it into the sim. Can anyone help with this?

Actually, in SH 3&4 weapons shall not to be added to 3d models itselves. the are added ingame by using nodes, which chose nessesary gun from a separate files.

Yes I'm aware the guns come from the sim. What I need to know is how to go about it. Is the nodes able to be place on the model now.
What is the best way to export from Max.
All I did was sypplied Serg with a model and texture he did the rest so I need some help to do his part.

Hi Seacondor,

I am still around but do not play SH3 any longer, only SH4. I'll try to help you. It is best for us all when you are able to convert your nice models to SH3/SH4 yourself. This way, you can be more efficient and productive.

As to problems with smoothing you mentioned, they are the result of conversion proceedures from Gmax.

If I remember correctly, SH3 does not use smoothing groups from other 3D software properly.

To start, install the S3D tool/program for SH3/SH4 written by skwasjer (see dedicated thread in SH4 modding forum). This program allows for export/import 3D models and editing of all kinds of files in SH3/SH4. There are a number of tutorials/videos on skwasjer's site including how to export/import SH models to/from 3DS MAX. More information concerning the tool can be found on SH4 modding forums.

The M-Class escort/minesweeper is the most important German vessel both in SH3 and CFS3 where it was originally built and has added greatly to both sims and has certainly been appreciated by those that know anything about WWII.

Updating the M would make it even nicer.
Thanks for considering it but with SH5 6 months(?) out SH3 may well be in its last days.
Just a note on reality

SH3-GWX3.0 is a long way from dead.

There is also alot of members here that don't have the money for upgrades at this time or in the near future to play SH5.

Yea when SHIV came out people said SHIII is dead. It looks just as popular if not more so than SHIV!

Absolutely true ...

I have SH3 and SH4, only tried once SH4 and never played it again.

In SH3 you're the "underdog" and that's much more interesting ... things get worse during WWII for a U-Boat Kaleun!

I never made in until 1943.

The GWX Single missions are so varied it's where I go to practice Surface attacks and evasion manuvers.

Also different attack approaches. Hydrophone/Sonar attacks.

Without messing up my career.

Good to see you are still around Serg. I would like to be able to do this myself so any advice is much appeciated to get me started.
There must be a way of fixing these smoothing problems, as I look at the other new ships and they don't have the issue.
So if someone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Hi Bob long time no see. I was thinking the same thing about SHV coming out. But I thought it would be nice to fix this up anyway for those that will continue using the Grey Wolves. Also from the little I have seen there is no sign of the minesweeper in SHV. I saw a the destroyers doing the escorting again in the released image. So there could be room to add it to SHV.
I plan to ask John CFS3's best painter to come on board to help repaint it once I know what I'm doing with the install.

Good to see you have not stopped sharing your great talents to not only the games you are in but even others.
You have always been generous.
I saw Fouteman is releasing a set of your Flower Corvettes in CFS3.

John reset the bar in painting every time he upped the ante others scrambled to keep up. He made all the painters better and was always gracious.
I was perplexed why ETO did not use all your ships, made no sense. Did not ask. I added the M1 (because that one you made for the original BoB in 04) to the recent mission set, the only thing required not in ETO (I did add an option that changed the crappy stock merchants to your beauties from MAW)

I know we are OT but for those who are not familiar with this painter's work here is a bf109E4 he did
getting taken down by a Hurricane over Kent in CFS3

Couldn't agree more. I did one career in SH4 and was back in the Kriegsmarine ASAP.

I just finished a total war career in GWX3.0, the first and only time I have done that (100% DiD) and am giving SH4 one last try but I can't see me lasting, just too boring.

However, SH5 is a different beast and upgrade to a new level and looks (looks have been deceiving before) like it will be so much better we will just not be able to resist.

To everything there is a season and while I enjoyed modding in CFS3 I have never enjoyed anything to date as much as GWX3 in any venue for play

Hard to believe SH5 will not have a M-Class but glad to hear Greg will be there to remedy that .

1. The problem might disappear when the 3D model is imported from 3DS MAX to SH3 using S3D tool and conversion from GMax is avoided. The link to the S3D thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119571

2. As I said in the your other thread, I have been able to improve the minesweeper look in SH4 by detaching some elements in polygons of the 3D model.

As to SH5, we have to see what changes and additions to file formats are introduced. Those can make current tools for SH3/SH4 unusable for SH5.

Hi Seacondor,
to add guns to a SH3 model you need a vertice for the weapon's location in the model's .Dat, an obj_turret controller node in the .sim, and the weapon's description in the EQP file.
All these things can be added using skywasjer's S3D as described in posts above.
I'm sure a number of contributors to this post know how to add guns to the models, so you may have this info already by now.
If not i'll explain in more detail, or arm the minesweeper for you if necessary.

I can't do modelling tho, so can't help you there i'm afraid.
