There I was, on the surface, at night. I find out that there's a DD in the vicinity when I'm being told damage reports, and said DD is brushing past my boat and painting me w/searchlights. And yet...my watch crew STILL hadn't said "Ship sighted!!!"
Wouldn't this come under the heading: wtf?

Does that mean 'watch too fatigued'?

Did you forget to put an officer up there? You can have all the watch crew you like, but only the watch officer can give you reports. Without an officer, watch crew are mostly just getting wet. Of course unless you modded the limits, time compression wouldn't work with an enemy ship that close, so you should know something is up.

On a couple of occasions my boat has actually been under fire and taking damage and still the watch has insisted theres no ships in sight!
I remember standing on the bridge ordering the gunners to open fire on a flower corvette that was shelling the heck out of my boat. There were searchlights and tracers zooming overhead and still they couldnt see the darn corvette! Im guessing those problems were down to a fatigued crew + a dark night (no not batman!). |

I've found that visibility at night seems to be affected only by natural visibility conditions and not anything that the ship you're trying to see may or may not be doing. If the ship is lit, using searchlights, firing at you, etc etc, none of this affects whether your watch crew can see them or not. In a case like that, better man the deck gun yourself!
