Default CTD with RFB :(

Hey guys,

I've been around Subsim a while but been very quiet of late, but getting very into SH4. I started playing stock, then RFB. I immediately liked the feel of RFB, but i started experiencing CTDs. These happened at various times, and seemed to be related to the periscope or TBT views during high-intensity action (i was being shelled by an approaching DD the first time, and looking thru the scope).

So i started testing. I selected the Battle of Midway mission, so that there would be plenty of enemy units close by, and surfaced in front of them, charging toward them at a flank bell. Of course they started shelling as soon as i was in range. At first, the first few shells would cause the CTD. I tend to leave my computer in standby a lot (but not with SH4 running!), so i rebooted and then used the JSGME to disable and then re-enable RFB. I also "turned down" the video performance to about medium. This had the effect of delaying the CTD until the moment that my boat was destroyed. I was on the bridge at the time.

I then disabled RFB and played the same mission, the same way. This time, when my boat was destroyed, i saw the external camera take over, and show my boat's last moments, then the mission results.

I repeated the mission several times, with RFB alternately enabled and disabled, with no other mods. My results were consistent - with RFB, i got the CTD at the moment of death. Without RFB - no CTD.

I hate to play without RFB... after reading the player's guide, i was very excited to use it. But i will have fun playing SH4 without it, if need be. I'd rather get this issue resolved and use RFB though.

I have yet to truly research whether my video drivers are up to date, but Windows "says" they are, after having checked with an online search. I'll do the check myself shortly. Also, and I apologize for this, but i have not had time to read thru the 120+ pages of this thread to see if there is a solution, but i did use the search feature and found no helpful results

Here are my system specs:

SH4 1.5 with RFB 1.52, no other mods
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.40GHz
4GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Realtek High Definition Audio

If anyone can provide a solution or useful suggestions, i'd greatly appreciate it!

TG

if you installed and uninstalled a few mods here and there then you may have some "mod soup" going on where leftover bits and pieces from mods were left behind somehow causing a corruption issue.

delete the jsgme mods folder and all your mods in it then run jsgme to create a new mods folder and replace all your mods with newly downloaded versions and that should clear up any issues.

also pay attention to the install order of large mods and their patches which if done wrong can cause issues

The man is the MAN! I am having a similar experience with TMO. When I try to run it, I get SH4 v. 1.5. I probably have corrupted mods as I have been running FOTRS for months.

sorry, i was in the middle of something and i didnt read through your entire post the first time and just skimmed over it but you sort of already diagnosed it yourself and determined it was somehow connected to a RFB related issue. RFB is pretty trouble free so i still think its a file corruption issue.

if cleaning up your files doesnt fix it then check the RFB thread for info and if you dont see anything about it then report it to luke, he is very good about catching anything thats not right and im sure he can help you there.

my guess is if its a RFB issue then he already knows about it and may have a fix for you

Make sure you have DX9 installed from the disc. You can run DX10, ect., but the game works with 9.

That's the patch and fix i was referring to. I only recently downloaded RFB, so I'm not sure if the patch and hotfix were a part of that download...

Thanks guys, gonna try the re-DL of RFB and the other suggestions tonight, but if there is a separate patch/hotfix out there, I'd love to be able to get my paws on it.
