Default Loading Deck gun?

I'm in my maiden patrol of my newbie career. I have GWX gold installed.

I have cripped a Medium Merchant I want to finish off with the deck gun. Problem is the deck gun isn't loaded. How do I load the deck gun? Or did I not arm the boat with shell prior to leaving port?

Man the deck gun yourself and choose what type of shells to use with a mouse pointer. That should start things moving.

Make sure you click on the artillery shell icon to load your gun ...when you manually man it.

If you're going to be firing the deck gun yourself, just click on the ammunition round displayed on the right when you're at the firing position. The weather has to be calm enough of course, below 8mps iirc. Otherwise just have the Watch Officer have the gun crew man the gun and let them do the job for you. Make their lives a bit easier by getting fairly close and make sure you have them aim at the waterline of the vessel. Pressing "I" will bring-up a panel and clicking on the icon at top-right of that panel will show you the number of rounds available. Good shooting!

It may be considered a bit of a cheat by some but I always load the deck gun when leaving the harbour. That way there is alway a round in the chamber, ready to shoot, if you encounter something good.

What if your deck gun gets destroyed under Depth-charge dropings and the shell that was loaded explodes and makes a hole in the ceiling ?
