Default How to start modding this here game then...

Okay, so i've been using many wonderful wonderful mods by you fantastic people, but what if i want to start modding things myself? where would i start? what kind of tools are available and what sort of techniques are there for this kind of thing?
i get that i can do some script modding and have in the past altered things like deck gun ammo etc.
i know the only limitation is knowledge so i'm trying to close that gap
any help seriously appreciated!
thanks
pete

Well the only tool I know of is the S3D editor by skwas. It's here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119571
It's a must for any modder because it edits the dat files of the game (along with others). But it will take some getting used to. At the moment SH3 has been modded to preety much perfection thanks to NYGM, GWX and OLC's Gui. Come to think of it, every time I tire of finding things i want to mod in SH4, I open up SH3 and just freaking play it .

Anyway, here's a few tutorials:
Ambient Occlusion
Bumb Mapping
Menu.ini file
Thread with Interface editing
Adding Units to the game
