Looks like he got a real good taste of what happened at Pearl. That Bowfin is top notch

Thanks for sharing.

that is the #2 turret casing of the sunken USS Arizona protruding from the sea.

(see this google image of the memorial which is built above the wreckage)

sadly, 1,102 of her crew are either, missing, buried or... still aboard.

This photo gives you and idea how big the monument is compared to the Arizona itself. She still leaks oil from what I understand.

Indeed she does...

i believe the figure is now estimated at around a quart or two per day.

because it is assumed she still has some 2,000 tons of bunker oil aboard... it is estimated that she will continue to leak her "tears" for another 65 years or longer (or until a corrosion of the hull results in a catastrophic release)

I'm sure this is just a case of honor but I assume that no other vessel has been named Arizona because of what happened to the Arizona during the attack on Pearl?

Thats definitely something I want to do, despite being an Aussie. I want to visit Pearl and pay my respects to the men and women of the US armed forces. I think we (As Aussies) owe them for fighting the Japanese back from so close to our homeland.

noble of you.

a lot of people dont realize it but there is in fact a sort of closeness of the US and Australia and Great Britain etc.

they are currently thinking of naming an aircraft carrier the USS Arizona but there is nothing official yet.

Must give the enviromentalists nightmares.

Wasent there some sort of movement to do something about removing the oil?

Oh btw thanks for sharing the pics !

Not that I've ever heard of. Besides submarines have been taking state names for 30 years now. There have been a few renames of the ships at battleship row. Pennsylvania, Nevada, Maryland, Tennessee, and West Virginia are Ohio class boats. California was just laid down last month as a Virginia class boat.

If I remember right Greenpeace tried to get on that like stink on sh!t. Uncle Sam sent them packing saying it was a war grave and a national landmark and to have some *******ing respect.

On the note of the original topic. Nice pics! I used to visit the Arizona every time we pulled into PH. My pics from port calls there are around somewhere.

CVN-79 is proposed to be named "USS Arizona"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CVN-79

if you put much stake in that... the contract for its construction has already been awarded. it shows up on Naval Registry as "Un- Named"

On 7 December 2007, the 66th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Congressman Harry Mitchell proposed naming this ship USS Arizona.
That's sure to stir up a hornets nest if it hasn't already. While the Arizona was stricken from the naval register, it would be kind of distasteful to use the name again. But you have to take into account the source too, could be total BS. Just my 2 cents though.

EDIT: Googled it and got confirmation, he really said it...
