Default What a downer.

Well, I had my first patrol. And I am not happy. I sank four merchants. But after sinking the fourth, I put the time compression to a high value. Before the time seized, I got hit by a warship on the surface that came out of nowhere and sank me.

The disappointment is two fold:
1) The game killed me in time compression mode, and
2) the damage showed up as marginal in the damage control screen yet I sank anyway. I was told there was flooding, but no way to address it or see it.

In silent Hunter I, the damage screen showed you actual flooding to several different degrees, and you had lots of warning of your impending doom.

I kinda feel cheated.

BTW, I took damage earlier in the patrol when I crashed dived and hit the bottom, which caused that pipe in the control room to spray water. But when on the surface, it continues to spray water like I am still submerged. Is there a fix for that?

Thanks

Apples
NB Does anybody have any experiences where your sub was sinking, but you managed to get it afloat again, and if so, how did you do it? There is no control for pumps, right?

In my experience this sudden death you experienced usually happens when the game is simulating stormy weather during high time compression and you happen upon a warship or armed merchant - the time compression wont drop until your actually under attack or your watch crew actually sees the enemy and it might be too late by then.

on anther note... did you actually see the enemy ship that got you or did you just suddenly die?

if this is the case... you wandered into a mine field at high time compression - big no no because you just suddenly get a death screen usually.

about saving a dieing boat?

once i struck a mine which caused signifigant damage to the bow quarters wounding several men and killing 2 or 3 of them.

the water was only about 60m deep.

my boat sank all the way to the sea floor and struck bottom causing some more damage.

i placed the damage control team into full swing, eventually most of the water was pumped out and i managed to blow every ounce of compressed air to bring it to the surface.

i cruised home with the bow almost completely submerged as the last bit of water would not pump out.

As GR said, blowing as much air as possible could save the UBoat, depends how bad the flooding is I guess.I try to save as much air as I can for emergencies only, and only use a bit to surface in very high seas, where the air seems to aid in the actual surfacing of the UBoat.I have only had to deal with a sinking UBoat once in my campaign, and I was lucky it only took a few minutes to pump all the water out.
So,blow all tanks and surface at flank speed (if you have enough battery power that is),while the men are working on the damage at the same time.
I think GR was fortunate in that the water was'nt too deep, enabling him to repair the damage on the bottom without fear of further sinking, but in the Atlantic it would quite simply be... , the UBoat would be crushed like a sardine can.

Sorry to hear about your demise.

Will you request a Death Card to honor your loss?
