Default Some Questions

I've been fooling around with SH4 for several weeks now, and in general it leaves SH3 eating its dust. In general.

I have some questions about SH4-related things though. Some of them might be better on the RFB and RSRDC threads, but I thought I'd ask in the general forum first.

1) NumPad 8, 4, 6 and 2 make the camera move, just like in SH3. 7 and 1 don't make it move up and down, though - it takes Shift+7 and Shift+1 to do that. I've looked at the Commands.cfg file over and over and can't find anything that toggles those motions. Any ideas?

2) RSRDC starts all patrols (or at least careers) at 0600. Is it possible to randomize the start times again?

3) In SH3 the crew would instantly leave the bridge when you ordered a dive. In SH4 they stay on the bridge until the very last second, even in a crash dive. The other way is much more realistic.

4) If I'm at periscope depth and order the sub deeper, I get the "Dive, Dive!" order and the klaxon all over again. Those are warnings that the sub is about to dive, not that you've already done so and just want to improve the odds. Any fix?

5) The clock. In SH3 the master clock is always on GMT. To get the local time you hover the cursor over the clock, and another one pops up with the local time and the date.

In SH4 the master clock is always on your home base's time. If you place the cursor over the clock another one pops up. It shows the exact same thing and says "Base Time". Is there a point, or am I missing something?

I hope there are some fixes for all this.

It took a patch to fix the clock in SH3 ... originally, it got borked if you crossed the Prime Meridian. The guy who fixed it must've then left the dev team 'cause the clock in SH4 is forever broken. A GMT (Zulu) clock would be nice but, at this late date, I doubt it will ever happen.

Boy, you don't ask easy questions.

1. an alternative is using home & end. Don't know about remapping, but it should be possible.

2. I always had random times with RSRD. Though I haven't really played in a while, just some testing, so that may have changed as of late. Don't know how to change this yourself.

3. I always figured the crew staying on the bridge was to "simulate" the time it took for all hands to get below. Guess it depends on your point of view.

4. Yeah, that's pretty weird. IIRC it doesn't happen if you're below PD and go deeper. No fix that I know of.

5. Clock is a total mystery to me, never really payed attention to it. Although, as far as I can remember it presents local time. Maybe you haven't been through enough timezones?

Less then helpfull, but at least it's an answer.

what version game are you running?

3 - the crews on ships only dissaappear by going underwater and the sub isnt considered underwater untill the deck is covered so thats why they wait so long to go away.

4 - if you use your mouse arrow to order a new depth it works fine but when you use the "d" key to dive you get the klaxon so just select you depth and only use "d" for emergency dive. (i think thats what it really is)

5 - in sh4 the clock is always set for one time period, i think comsubpac local time.

steve you may already know this but heres a heads up just in case you missed it:

watch your fuel usage and batteries charging. (this is a hard coded unmoddable game thing you have to watch for)

when batteries are damage the engines always run full speed to charge them and you lose fuel economy so make sure you manually turn off battery charging or it can cut your fuel ranges in half.

The 'd' key is NOT for emergency dive (Crash Dive), the "c" is for emergency/crash dive.

Thanks for the replies. Too bad there aren't any real answers to be had.

Gold with RFB and RSRDC.

I know. That's one of the things I like better about SH3 - you order a dive and they get below first thing. This way is odd.

No, that's my problem. I'm a periscope depth and I click on 150 feet, and they yell "Dive! Dive!" and the klaxon goes off all over again. Grinding my teeth.

It always says "Base Time." I thought it set if for your base's local time, but I could be wrong.

Something else that's starting to bug me. A lot of people complained about SH4's interface compared to that in SH3, but others said "You get used to it very quickly." I agree, you do adapt. One thing they changed that's driving me crazy is access to panels. I thought right-clicking on an officer or specialist to access his panel was quite natural - "Hey, buddy, let me have a look at your screen." The way the whole panel lights up when the cursor is on it is very distracting, not to mention immersion-killing. Also, sometimes once the cursor is on the panel it doesn't matter where I move it - the panel stays lit up. I have to go into that screen and right-click back out again. Annoying, to say the least.

Hi Sailor Steve, I'm on limitted time and I don't have RSRD / RFB, so I'll answer the first question (perhaps) as I have a bit of free time. In commands.cfg the command is called Strafe_up and Strafe_up_fast. For whatever reason it sounds like RFB disabled moving up and down, but not for fast mode and that's why it's like that. I haven't got RFB, so I can't look at the files, but it should be a case of uncommenting some lines or adding them back in. If you get stuck, PM me and I'll dig deeper if needed.
