Default Missing, Presumed Lost

Long story warning:

Two months ago I actually started playing again, after more months of working on my Ship Names project and trying out different mods until I had it set up just the way I wanted it. First I did a prewar visit to Gdansk in a Type II, then played out a transfer from Konigsberg to Kiel in a Type VII.

March 12: For my first patrol in the Type VII I very carefully set SH3 Commander's 'Days In Base' to let me depart on patrol along with the other 13 boats on August 19, the historic date they were sent out. Of course I was still based at Konigsberg but leaving from Kiel, so Commander made it one day and I actually left on August 5.

On the way I ran into a sinking merchant in a storm and role-played saving some of the crew and dropping them off at Rotterdam. The a leisurely voyage through the Channel to my self-assigned grid at the Western Approaches - BF12. I then stopped the boat, saved the game and set the max TC for 2048 (I normally keep it at 128), and fast-forwarded to the 19th plus transit time. I think I started actually playing again on about the 24th.

On September 1st the war started as it was supposed to, and I patrolled the area for almost two months game time, sinking six ships along the way. I headed home, this time taking the long way around Scotland and the Shetlands, then headed for Brunsbuttel. My last save was just off the mouth of the Elbe, and I thought I would load it up on Sunday, April 12, and make the trip through the Kanal to Kiel in one last session, exactly a month after I started the patrol. Since I have that kind of information, my plan was to exchange the randomized tonnages for the real tonnages of the ships I sank, once I had the names.

Yesterday morning I loaded the game, loaded the patrol and it CRASHED!!!

I tried it again and it crashed again. I tried it without Commander and it crashed again. I loaded up my Type II career and it started with no trouble. So I went for a very long walk and then it hit me: During the week I updated the Ship Names mod with Jimbuna's Q-Ships and VonDos's Arandora Star. I don't think adding those to Commander would have any effect, but I'm pretty certain I also added the ships to my Sea and Roster folders without thinking, and that's something you don't want to do in mid-patrol.

So, after a month of carefully nurturing my new boat and crew, they failed to come home from their first patrol, and no one has a clue as to their fate.

Steve, Do you still have the save that crashes? If you revert the shipnames file back to how it was before that save, it might load ok.

If not, then I feel your pain.

I still have the game, but I didn't use JSGME to install the new ships. I'll try removing them - we'll see what happens. It's not really that important to me, I just thought it was funny that I did it just one session before I finished the patrol.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

Have picked up some survivors,
Their in an irate state, have tried to question them but when I ask "Where is your Commanding Officer" they go into mass hysteria.

Steve......If you recall the PM we exchanged over at The Lair a few weeks back regarding the naming convention.

Ignore the readme that comes with the Q Ship mod.....and in the Sea folder EnglishNames CFG put:

SCF=Q Ship

In the SH3 Commander ShipNames CFG put:

[SCF]
CrewRange=40|70
0001=Q Ship HMS Chatsgrove
0002=Q Ship HMS Maunder
0003=Q Ship HMS Prunella
0004=Q Ship HMS Lambridge
0005=Q Ship HMS Edgehill
0006=Q Ship HMS Brutus
0007=Q Ship HMS Cyprus
0008=Q Ship HMS Looe
0009=Q Ship HMS Antoine
0010=Q Ship USS Atik
0011=Q Ship USS Captor
0012=Q Ship USS Asterion
0013=Q Ship Uss Big Horn
0014=Q Ship USS Irene Forsyte

Now you should get individual ship names in your patrol log.

Already did that, Jim. In fact I've released an update to the mod, including your and VonDos's newest. I hedged my bets, though - I used [LOV] as you said in the readme, but I used the pathway at the top to guide SCF=LOV just in case.

Or was it the other way around? Doesn't matter, as it should work either way.

WOOHOO! IT WORKED...sort of...

It wasn't the ship names file, as that only kicks in after the patrol ends. It was installing the actual ships mid-patrol, and I tried taking them back out. The game loaded, and then instantly killed me! Collision (probably with the shallow bottom). I tried it again, blowing emergency ballast, but I still died for no reason.

Later in the day, I had an idea: I loaded the game again, and as soon as I got the interior screen I immediately hit 'Esc', and then selected 'Return To Base'. Only that option wasn't there. Since I was so close to the mouth of the Elbe it offered 'Dock At Helgoland'. So I spent the night at Helgoland, and immediately headed home to Kiel, and now I finished the patrol!

Thanks, Otto.

Of course this means that Badwolf must have picked up survivors from some other unfortunate u-tard...I mean u-boat.:rotfl:

If your using "SCF=LOV"....what does the patrol log say?

I've been using SCF=Q Ship at my end and it appears to be working fine.

The Patrol Log should say what the Display Name says, so it should be the same either way.

I left Bernard in charge of them. Apparently his reputation is well known.
