Default Is there a player's guide available?

I was trying to understand what my damage-report screen was telling me, and not getting much help from the rather sparse manual as to figuring out how bady damaged each red-highlighted system was. Has anyone (Sybex, etc.) published a player's guide, Strategies and Secrets book, whatever it'd be called, that would give more detail as to how to read and use the various systems and screens in the game? Or will I have to search this site and/or the Web for answer to each individual question? I had to search to find out why my boat would suddenly stop for several hours without explanation (leaving Battle Stations on too long). (BTW, a search for "Wolves of the Pacific" and Sybex didn't turn up any positive hits for a player's guide by them.) Thanks for any help.

Searching here will give you tons of information. Apparently the search does not use word of 3 or less letters, so some say they use google to search this site, I have not tried it.

As for the damage screen, if an item is RED it is damaged. At the right of the item is a vertical bar, hover over it with the mouse and it will tell you the amount of damage. (height of the bad gives the same info) If you hover over the bar and get "1" and the red bar is all the way to the top, then it is destroyed and can not be fixed at sea, unless you have the "special abilities" person that can fix "even damaged items". If available you can add this person to your sub in port by 'buying' him with your renown.

So if you get a "1" on all your engines then it is 'game over', you can not fix them and you won't be able to move.(don't just go by the red bar, hover over it, you may discover it is .99 and can be fixed but will take a long time.)

Below this is a Priority box. It shows which item are given priority to be fixed. So if you are trying to escape from DDs and they are giving priority to the radar, meanwhile the bulkheads are damaged and the boat is flooding, you may want to move the bulkheads to the top of the priority list.

Enabling the damage crew and Battlestations will increase the speed things get fixed, unless the crew is exausted from being at battlestations for a long time. And silent running will stop things from being fixed.

That's just a quick rundown of what the screen tells you. If you can make it to ANY friendly base the damage can be fixed, but Hull damage can only be fixed at your home port. So if the torpedo tubes and deckguns are damaged, you may want to head to the nearest friendly port to fix them so you can defend yourself on the trip home. (It will also restock your ship with ammo and supplies.)

You're never going to find a commercially available printed strategy guide for a sim like this. I think most publishers deem the market too small.

Well, since it seems my propeller shafts have gone bye-bye, it looks like it's time to start a new career. Thanks.

The best manual you will find anywhere, is right here in these forums.
There is not one aspect of the game you can't find detailed information about here. There are many tutorials to teach you about anything you wanna know! Just use the search function. A good place to start might be the two links below.
