Default Not sure if something like this is possible in the SH4 engine...

Like I said, not sure if something like this is possible.

But if it is...

The things I'm talking about is a strictly high-end PC graphical upgrade, including Ambient Occlusion and Global Illumination.

Now I can hear you guys telling me to slow down and explain what those big words mean.

I got something better. I'll show you what they mean

This series of images shows, basically what these can do for SH4.

I'm using the VIIC model for SH3 for this. Stock textures and everything.

1st image: "Stock" No lighting, basically what is almost in SH3.

2nd image: "Stock" Lighting, basically what is kinda in SH4, shadows and what not.

3rd image: Ambient Occlusion on Global Illumination off. The seams and little details on the model are more pronounced.

4th image: Ambient Occlusion on, Global Illumination on. Same scene and everything. Definitely makes it worlds better.

"Hold on!" I hear you say, "That last one is just brightened! What's so special about that?"

Global Illumination, is, one of the better ways to light a scene. It does it by doing light bounces, like what light does in real life. It bounces the light off of one object, and takes the color of that object and bounces it onto the nearest surface. Hold something red near a white sheet of paper, you'll see a bit of red on the paper, that's Global Illumination. For a pretty good idea of what it does to a game, look at Crysis on DX10. It's using both of those lighting techniques.

Now, can this be done in SH4? I'm not too sure of that...Ambient Occlusion can be faked I think by using another texture for it. But Global Illumination...that'll be a tough one to crack.

But if it can't be done in SH4, there's always SH5

What did he say? Was that English? Wouldn't that be similar to the ocean reflecting off the sub which is in SH4 especially with some of the MODs. You will probably get someone to answer this that actually has a clue.

Would that be similar to what I used to know as "Raytracing" on still scenes?

Raytracing would actually be a good starting point for that.

I'm not too fluent in the lighting of SH4...but...eh...I can learn

Edit: and Wikipedia to the rescue!

Well, Wiki says:"In practice, however, only the simulation of diffuse inter-reflection or caustics is called global illumination." And I have seen 'caustics' listed in the game so it must do some of that stuff you were talking about.
I know there are some people in here that really know there stuff when it come to lighting. ME, if it doesn't have a switch connected to it, I'm lost.

I've been fiddling with the scene.dat file, specifically the "lighting", trying to change the lighting effect.

But, no effect, it just keeps crashing on me...

Anyone have any ideas?
