Hi All,
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I just came across what I thought might simply be coincidence, and wandered if some WWII/U-boat buffs could enlighten me. On the main screen of SH3 GWX3 there is what I presume to be a quotation at the bottom of the screen "All you need is good men...Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock" Having just re-read Das Boot (again!), on page 501, just after the Chief reports that the boat is ready to attempt to surface after having to carry out repairs at 900 feet after being bombed, the 'Old Man' states "Good men-simply have to have-good men" Being similar quotes, I wondered whether that was coincidence, or is the quote on the game screen the film (which I haven't yet seen) version of the quote from the book? Thanks, Dud Last edited by TheDudTorpedo; 03-03-09 at 05:01 AM. |

Wow! You must be one of the few who has read the book but never seen the movie.
Bear in mind that according to Lothar-Günther Buchheim anyway, the characters in Das Boot were fictional composites of people he had met while serving on U-Boats and surface ships in the Kriegsmarine. Although based on Willenbrock, it's not actually Willenbrock in the novel. It's also my understanding that Buchheim wasn't too thrilled with the movie version of his book, but I guess he had a reputation of being a rather difficult character. |

In the German version of the book it's "Gute Männer... Alles was man braucht, sind gute Männer.". The quotation is the more literal translation.
If you liked "Das Boot" try "Die Festung". ![]() |

Thanks guys - I'll definately try "Die Festung" - has it been translated into English, and do you have the authors name?
At the moment I'm reading "Iron Coffins" by Herbert Werner which is really very good. I must make an effort to see Das Boot the movie too. |

The author: Lothar-Günther Buchheim. "Die Festung" is something like a sequel to "Das Boot" except that it's more autobiografic. Amazon says it hasn't been translated, err... how good is your German?

Willenbrock also served as technical advisor on the movie.
