Default Damage priorities

I've never actually been damaged without dying within 30 seconds, (except for minor damage to flak and deck guns from aircraft,) but I'd like to know the best way to handle damage.

If I've got yellow damage in one compartment and red damage in another, which do I fix first? Is there any combination of damage that will block my repair crew from fixing some rooms?

Is damage control more complex than it seems?

What's the best method of stopping a dive? Just air or using the engines? Do I have to check the deck angle and decide if I have to use reverse instead of forward?

Thanks!

Your first priority should be to contain flooding. Crew in compartments will work on damage even if you don't have the damage control team assigned to that compartment, so assign the the DC team to whatever compartment has the worst flooding. Once you have the flooding controlled, get on your propulsion systems. Fix batteries and electric engines first in case you need to make a submerged getaway. Once that's been handled, go for repairing diesels. After that, it's your call. If you decide to stay out, work on torpedo tubes and hydrophones. If not, you'll be in decent shape to get on back home.

Also using reverse can slow a decent, buying you vital time to fix flooding.pay close attention to the time's given to you in the damaged sections,as the war progresses its worth getting more qualified DC men that you can spare, you are going to need them more,on a TypeIX for instance you can get up to 8 qualified DC officers without affecting the working of the boat to much, they can make the difference later on when your chances of damage are greater

Oh, good tips!

I'm in a IX now, in October of '41. The airplanes are just beginning to get serious, and the first 100km of each patrol is nerve-wracking. (At least I can time the end of the patrol to arrive in darkness!)

I haven't yet been bounced by a whole string of bombers. I'll be surprised if I survive that.

Once you have the damage control system worked out, you may start to feel a little masochistic towards your crew. At that point you can do as I have and install the longer repair times mod. I enjoy the tension of having damage that takes hours to fix, just as in real life:

One of the best things you can do is get an L.I. (or another officer) with a repair qualification -- when you put him on the damage control team, the green bar fills up, and repairs proceed a lot faster.

Oh, and if you're flooding, try to have that sorted before you get really deep. The greater the pressure, the harder it is to stop the flooding. In fact, it could even get worse, despite their best efforts.
