Default Are torpedoes still able to break up ships in GWX 3?

I'm asking since I haven't seen a ship breaking up even though it was hit by 4 torpedoes......

I miss ships breaking up in SH3.....is there a way around to get this effect back?

They do.

however it is important to remember that GWX 3.0 is a realism mod. In real life, most ships did not break up, in fact they sank whole from flooding more often than not. The Ships in GWX will break up, but this is a very rare occurrence.

Stock SH3 damage models were fare too "arcade like" and almost every ship i ever hit broke in half

I would say that in GWX 3.0 i have witnessed perhaps a dozen ships break in half since the release date.

Thanks Rivet. Glad to know that for a fact. I'm a realism nuts so it's a good thing then.

glad to help... just keep watching, the most likely cause of a break up is to have used a magnetic pistol set to detonate under the ships keel

i only saw it once, and it was on a 10,000 plus ton large merchant. i hit it with only one torpedo, and it wasn't even dead center. i thought it was wierd, usually, those large merchants take at least 2 direct hits, and hours to sink

Using GWX 3 and I just broke the back of a large tanker in a convoy last night. That was pretty impressive, especially with the enhanced damage effects. The thing basically turned into a fireball, snapped in half and left nothing but an oil slick behind.

Remember that it's not so much how many torpedoes you use, it's where you put them. Keel shots increase your chances of a ship breaking up.

Snapped two Empire Class freighter in half in a row in a convoy yesterday. Of the second one, the aft section was still floating and burning after an hour.. when the DD's finally gave up and sped away to catch up with the convoy.

Under-keel shots on anything smaller than a C2 (Sorry, medium cargo) will nearly always break their back.

I tried experimenting by launching 4 under the keel torpedoes at a small tanker in the convoy attack tutorial and the tanker exploded snapping it into two.

But the weird thing was one of the escort, the smaller one, attacked the other escort, a destroyer, for no apparent reason. Friendly fire is it a known problem in GWX 3?

in the training mission, everyone is neutral until someone hurts someone else.

In numerous cases in the training mission, once you attack a cargo ship, one of the destroyers will retaliate against you usually by firing a shot at your periscope.

if this happens, escort B will now attack escort A because Escort A has attacked a neutral.

its a little convoluted... but it is something along those lines, and does not normally happen in the campaign

Ships breaking up is very rare in GWX. I still see it happen, but it is usually during the sinking process rather than on initial impact. Also, I'm pretty sure I've _never_ seen the center of the ship, once broken, lift up into the air as they did in stock SH3:

Playing GWX, often I'll hit a merchie with two torps around the center, causing her center zones to flood, but with buoyancy in the front and rear she'll stay afloat. Then I'll deck gun her just in front of the center, and she'll break up. Yesterday I sunk two tankers (a medium and a large) in 20m water off of New York - they both exploded and broke up, with center pieces touching bottom and the stern and nose pointing out of the water. It was quite scenic.

Oh I see. It's fine then.

I love ships being lifted up and breaking up by torpedoes. Even though people claim that it isn't realistic but still what a sight to behold.

That still also happens occasionally, I have a few in the 2200+ screenshots I took during normal play and GWX testing that show several types of ships doing exactly as in the picture above, from River class DEs and several types of DD to Ore carriers and even a T3 tanker, although that didn't lift out of the water that far...

but never had it with the passenger/cargo
