My favorite spot is the Mona Passage, right along the line between ED11 and ED12. Most of the traffic seems to run east of the Isla Mona, between it and Puerto Rico, although I've also bagged ships west of the Isla Mona, between it and the Dominican Republic.
Today's contact was typical. A convoy of 8 ships escorted by only two Buckley-class destroyers. 5 of the 8 were tankers, and two of the other 3 were large freighters. Easy pickings and for April of 1944 extremely safe. Note: I came here instead of heading to my assigned patrol zone off Cape Town. I'm in a IXC out of Lorient and when I plotted my course and set the optimal 8.2 knot speed I did not have the fuel to reach Cape Town and return. It might be doable if I fueled up at the U-488. Or I thought about going to Cape Town, running my patrol there, then just ending the patrol instead of sailing home. Any thoughts on how I could have patrolled my assigned grid off South Africa?

BF17. A reasonable assortment of undefended merchants. Occasional small convoys with minimal to no protection. No air cover until the middle of the war and deep water to hide in where the shipping lane goes through the grid square. The grid isn't completely full of deep water, but it has never been an issue. BF13 has more traffic, but is patrolled by frigates and the water is a bit more shallow. BF 17 is definitely a good spot for easy kills.

Unless I run out of eels, I always go to my assigned area and wait atleast two days for action.
If nothing appears and experience leads me to believe it won't, I move on. My favorite areas are AM 52 and AM 53. I also like CG 86 area. On the first patrol of the war-I go for the St. George's channel-I think AM 97. Afrika has always been a bust for me. ![]()

Until recently, 150km west of Gibby. Now I'm going to stay at least 200km west...

Well at least we get a new thread on this topic again. 4/5 on the necro scale. Good on topic conversation, did not start a new thread, points off for no warning and the possibility that it's out o date with recent mod changes.
That said. I like the Miami straights. Between the Bahamas and Florida. Juicy. |

And I agree. As I've said many times, my problem isn't with bringing up an old thread, per se, it's with answering a two-year-old comment as if it was made two minutes ago. I therefore exercise my right to make fun of people who do it without warning.

I go to my patrol area but always visit grid DR and surrounding areas, and the Canary Islands and any access routes to Gibraltar.

This bit especially " and any access routes to Gibraltar"....250km west will usually bring the best rewards.
