Well, there is no estimate speed button at the sonar station. Both the send range to TDC on the button bar and the switch on the panel do exactly the same thing. I don't quite understand your question.

I think I understand your question, and the difference (I think) is when you click on the Range icon your sonar man is giving you and estimate and he is not accurate. When you are at the sonar station and click the Range to Target button you are getting the range directly and it's more accurate.

Is that what you wanted?

Your exactly right Banjo.

The Range estimate button is having the sonar man give you the "estimated" range (which can be affected by his abilities and experience).

When you do it yourself by setting the realitive bearing of the contact on the right bearing dial and asking for the range by moving the toggle switch. The "estimated" range will appear on the message board readout. But, if you click the toggle switch for sending range to the Position Keeper you will see the range back at the PK different than the estimated range of the message board. The "nuts-on" correct range is showing in the Position Keeper. Use either the sonar man's range or the message board readout of range as an estimate. Sending the range to the PK after you do it yourself is accurate, dead on.
