Having played SH3 (stock, and GWX) off and on for over a year, I noticed I was rarely using the binoculars. They just didn't seem to add that much to the sim.
So, with an eye towards spicing them up a little... ![]() The horizontal and vertical axes of the reticule are calibrated in 1-degree units for the major divisions, down to 0.05-degree units for the smallest divisions. From largest to smallest division they are calibrated as follows: 1.0 deg 0.5 deg 0.1 deg 0.05 deg I've tested in both SH3 1.4b and GWX 1.03 with no problems. If you want to give it a try, here is the download link: http://files.filefront.com/binocularV1zip/;8897360;/fileinfo.html If the link above doesn't work, its the "binocularV1.zip" file at the following link: http://hosted.filefront.com/alongnightsmuse/ It comes with its own installer or you can do it manually. By the way, if any of you modders ever want to use this mod, or the methods I used to create this mod, please feel free to do so and don't feel obligated to seek my permission or give me credit or anything like that. This is just a small way to give back to the subsim community, and I hope some of you find it useful. I know I sure have enjoyed the incredible mods that many of you have contributed over the years, and look forward to seeing the results of the several very interesting utilities and mods that are currently in development on this forum. muser

Well, it's not historically accurate. And you know what? I don't care

May not be historically accurate but they do give a professional military feel to the game.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.
I have a 13 year old that likes math and so I created the reticule as a simple tool to show him that there are and were real-world uses for geometry and trigonometry. Of course, as you have observed, it isn't historically accurate. That did bother me a bit, as I believe that straying from the historical reality of the U-Boat sailors experience diminishes the wide spread appeal of the sim, and more or less reduces it to just another computer game. So, to appease my guilty concience for creating the reticule, I had to come up with some kind of possible historical basis for it. To that end, I've included my "historical scenario" in the ReadMe.pdf that is contained in the download. OK, It's...well...total fiction. But I feel better about it. If you like, you can download just the ReadME file here: http://files.filefront.com/BinV1Read.../fileinfo.html Or the complete mod here: http://files.filefront.com/binocular.../fileinfo.html By the way, xristoskaiti, I see you are from Pireas. I visited Athens and Delphi many years ago -- an amazing city and a beautiful country. As for making a reticule for the UZO, a fun idea, but I'll probably pass. My guess is that the UZO was probably a fairly tightly controlled and standardized item issued to the U-Boat service for that particular purpose. Whereas the binocular I've modded could have been brought aboard by anyone -- even if historically unlikely.
