Default Potential campaign spoiler: Sovetskaya

I posted something similar to this on the old Battlefront board. I'm not an experienced sub driver and while trying to play through the campaign I've been stopped at the Sovetskaya mission for some time now. I've been trying to play the mission as a pro-rebel 688i and I've made it through alive one time without ever firing a shot or even really knowing what's going on around me. Here's what I do and what usually happens:

The mission starts with my sub doing 5kts at 65 ft. There is usually between 400 and 1200 ft of water depending on my location. I usually go to 54 ft and ventilate while charging my air pressure to 100%(maybe I shouldn't do this but based on what happens later I think I should have as much air pressure as I can get). Meanwhile I deploy the TA and look for contacts with the Sphere until the TA is usable. I usually find the Delta right away, then an Oscar and sometimes the Typhoon. These are all rebel boats so I try to track but what I'm looking for are the Akulas. They must be stopped before they sink the SSBN's. What has happened 99.9% of the time is that the area becomes contact hell - with multiple torps in the water before I ever get even a hint of an Akula. On the few occaisions that I've gotten a contact with one I've been destroyed before I could get a good enough solution so as not to hit any of the rebel subs. Jamie said, in the Battlefront thread, that playing as rebel ally should be the easiest way but that has not been my experience. I always get contact with the Delta and Typhoon before the Akulas so I imagine taking them out would be easier.

So, any skilled drivers want to through out some tips on how to deal with contact madness and multiple incoming torps for those of us who are still trying to get a handle on it?

Okay,
Since no one is willing to offer advice I tried playing the mission with show truth on. I'm very disappointed with the performance of sonar. I had an Akula doing 30+ knots within a mile of my position and both the sphere and TA barely noticed it (not on the other side of layer). Any ideas about how this can happen?

I know what you're talking about...
My only suggestion is to stay away from the middle until you can have some situational awareness. The other platforms, if I remember right, are originally quite close to each other, which doesn't help the situation.

I also suggest you get yourself more missions (and the excellent Red Storm Rising campaign) from
