Bad english translations im guessing.

It's acutaly a bit more articulate if you watch the german version with engish subtitles.

That said, the engish version is close. but not quite on the money.

I was an American destroyer sailor, and believe me, the language, jokes and references can get pretty wild sometimes.

well the old phrase, "curse like a sailor" didnt come from nowhere.

Acutaly most military can get pretty wild with their jokes, regardless of branch.

I'm a Merchant Marine cadet and I can yell insult or profanity for two minutes straight without repeating myself, in two languages.

Believe me, these jokes are mild. These guys spend months without much feminine contact, if at all. And when you do see a woman, she's usually a... Professional, y'know? Manners and taste degrade. Vaseline jokes? Totally.

I mean, how else can you get a salty up the Seaway?

I'd say Das Boot turned it down a notch. Or ten.

Haha, I agree. You don't have to be a sailor to get all perverted and wacky. Ha, we do it in english class all the time.

And when you think about it....

Those german sailors were around our age....They were the flower of their generation and they were just as energetic then as we are now....

So why should we be disgusted with their language....we are not any better....

Twitchy, get the rope out.

And yes the movie was made in the 80s, Kiwi_2005, but it was all taken from a book written in the 70s, by a man who was on real u-boats in the 40s.

In the real U96 aswell. There was a thread on ubi.com forums, where some guy posted photos aboard the U96 taken by the Buchheim.

Too bad I couldn´t find the thread, those photos were amazing!

Edit: Here´s the link to that thread: http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums...743#8631071743

Every photo expect that big explosion is taken aboard the U-96

Ps. Before someone will start the "That´s not the U96! Theres no laughing swordfish"- thing:

Yeah, Frenssen and Pilgrim with their dirty talking and disgusting habits are my absolute favourite characters in the movie Miles away from the stereotypical Hollywood German.

I served 8 years in the German navy and the language from the "Das Boot" is still harmless in comparison to the reality. We have still conversed more rougher, particularly at sea after the daily evening beer.
