Hi Guys,
I was just watching Das Boot and I noticed something that sounds just like background communication but might be an ironic and sad point to this great story. Just after the night club scene the Captain, Werner and the Chief are walking throught the sub pen towards their boat. On the PA an announcement is made "Chief Engineer of U-96, you have a phone call from Germany". I'm wondering if this is a phone call from the Chief's sick wife that he missed in the confusion. It's presented so subtlely that I was'nt sure if that was the case or not. If so it makes this story tug at the heart strings even more... (I like the Chief and feel for the guy) |

Since I speak only a few handy phrases in German I could never have caught such a thing. Nice catch.
I like the Chief too. He seemed like a good man. ![]()

Have you tried watching it in German but with English subtitles?

I haven't watched it for a while so there is a good excuse to lose myself for a few hours.I knew about this part of the plot but it may have been when I watched it in English.

The Chief makes a call in the bar scene but is unable to get through.

Another hour-and-a-half of discussions in the bar, Ullmann with his pregnant French girlfriend (yes, we actually get to see her), the crew doing odd and silly things while they're bored, the Old Man explaining to the Reporter exactly why he didn't pick up the British tanker survivors, an early air attack (second "ALARM" crash dive scene), an aircraft spotting that may not have been (I won't give out a spoiler here), extended depth-charge and repair scenes, more conversations around the table and a huge bonus: the whole thing is narrated by 'Werner', the correspondent.
