Default meaning of Kaleun?

i've always thought of it to be Captain or something of the sort. Anyone speak German and can translate for us?

interestingly enough it doesn't translate in online dictionaries.

While i can't say for sure, im almost postive it's captain. That is, at least, the context it is always used in.

Unless im mistaken, it was customary to the german military to address someone by their rank. Not that, that is anything new, but i think they were alot more rigid about following this custom.

Kaleun [Ka-leun - One of the three lowest Officer ranks! ] is the Marine-Slang of the long and stiff sounding Kapitän-Leutnant! (imagine the crew calling you the long form, every time they verbaly get an order. :88 !

You'll still be Kaleun, cuz the title has the Leutnant-Rank in it - and indicates that you are also a Kapitän aka the commanding Officer of a Boot.

You're the Kapitän of your Boot, no matter if you command is given to you at the rank of Leutnant zu See or Oberleutnatnt zu See.

KapitanLeutnant is the German equivalent of the American rank Lieutenant Commander, which also happens to have been the rank of the majority of U.S. sub captains.

Funny thing, that.
