Default Are the Mavs always like this?

Today, I played Red Storm Rising, Polar Glory. I armed myself with Mavericks on a P-3 and prepared to sink those hovercraft when they appeared.

It should have been easy, but My missiles kept hitting the water before they hit the target.

To give me more time to designate, I was flying at low speed and 1000 feet. When that didn't work, I flew at 2000, then 3000. I tried targetting them with Show Truth on (no positioning error now). Still my misiles kept hitting the water.

Is this inevitable?

I assume you were using LWAMI 3.02.

The range of the Mavericks has been decreased to 25 KM.

Other than that, I can't say I have had any trouble like that specifically with the maverick.

I am firing them at about 3-10KM. They hit more at 3KM, by the way. Ugh.

I had the same problem in the same mission with and without LWAMI. What does the maverick home in on ingame?

Well, I BETA tested the Polar Glory mission and the Mavs worked great back then, just had to make sure to carry enough of them for all the LCACs.

I've actually had problems on the same mission with missed shots, I was never sure what was happening or even if it might have been a defective user. My missed shots usually seemed to miss laterally (I watched from the IR camera) instead of hitting the water short of the target.

Are there iceburgs or other environmental features around?

Interestingly (and counter-intuitively to me), the environment itself has an IR signature that can sometimes interfere with missiles that use IR sensors; that one of the reasons why the SLAM-ER used to malfunction when it crossed from the sea onto land, and why removing the IR seeker allows the missile to work properly.

That's what I was thinking - it must be homing on some stupid glint of the sun in the water. I can almost forgive it, except a Mav is supposed to be imaging infrared, lock on BEFORE launch. I should have that darn hovercraft centered in its seeker and it should ignore any glints or even flares!

It depends which version of the Maverick.

They are not all IIR. One version (and I think it is the latest one) the AGM-65G, is IR only.

They were not really reliable (that I learned lately) against ships because they were susceptible a lot against water vapor and other parameters created by the water environment

Nope, sorry but the AGM-65G has the same seeker as the D model and both are imaging infra-red. E model is laser guided and the A and B models are TV (with the B having a zoom function).

It's impervious to flares, the only thing that will stop it seeing the target is terrain or thermal smoke.

If you have ever watched a cop chase on TV, the picture you get is a similar (low resolution) version of the helicopters FLIR picture.

Only missiles that use plain IR "look for the hot spot" are AA missiles (stinger, older sidewinders etc)

Exactly,

May be you are right on your first one but do you know how bad is FLIR with fog and humidity... pretty limited.

The F-18 stop using the AGM-65G because of that (for the maritime side).

Maverics:
A-Electro optics TV guidance
B-Same as A model but added magnification(for easier looooong range aquisition)
D-IR
G-same as D but with warhead designed foer use against hardened targets such as bunkers, aircraft shelters etc...

The Maverick always hit about 20 feet aft of the hovercraft but took out the cigarette boats OK.
