Default U-71: Missing

Hey there, fellow Kaleuns.

I've started a new boote, and am posting Patrol Logs at my glog on another site. Hans Jackel is an SH3 commander-generated character, and we're running Tonnage War mod 1.03 with 100% realism (minus manual targetting). I'm adding a bit to the story in terms of the human factor, where possible and where time permits, but the basic idea is that the story will be written by the game. I'll post the reports as soon as I can format them, attach any relevant pics, and get them up. There's already been some crazy adventure in his career, but I won't spoil that for you. It will be up in good time. And, by the way, Dead is Dead. So, U-71 will need as many crossed fingers as it can get because right now it's August 1942 and it ain't getting any easier.

Great stuff!

Only six days on patrol and almost 47,000 tons sunk seems a bit extreme to me.

Just my opinion, of course.

Well, it was a good convoy. Large tankers x 2 = 20000 + 3x Large cargo = 22 thou + medium tanker = 8thou = 48thou. I think 40 is about average for a good patrol. If you get super lucky and you catch a capital ship, or a whole wack of large cargos, you can hit 60 or so.

What do you tend to haul?

The best patrol I've had netted 24,000 tons; but that took more than two months.

hmmm. That's with convoys?! Also, you must use manual targetting (i.e. more misses). Also, were the numbers I listed similar to the ones you see (i.e. Large Tanker/T3 = 10000, Large Cargo/C3 = 8000)? If so, you can almost always sink either one with 2 torpedo hits. I think the Type VII carries about 14 torps, which at best is 7 ships by this math. If you get all 7 as C3s, that gives you roughly 56k. If you mix in a few tankers, you get more. If you have duds on (which is more fun), you might get half that - i.e. 30k. On the other hand, there are lucky shots (i usually fire one at each ship, wait, then fire the next round so that i don't waste in the case of a critical hit). I try to attack from inside the convoy at all times to get close range shots, as well as simultaneous fore and aft surprise T2 shots. Then there's the deck gun. With the mod I'm using (Tonnage war) it takes over 100 shots to puncture enough compartments to sink a c3, for instance (though it doesn't vary much between ships). Thus, it's really only useful for wounded ships. In that case, it takes about 50.

The thing is, I never spend months at see because as soon as I find a convoy, I expend all torps on it, even if I'm down to coastal merchants. If you get a convoy coming eastbound from new york or halifax, it's often FULL of huge ships. I've seen 4xT3 + passenger liner + assorted T2s + unlimited C3s. That's more than you can take out with a IX load of torps. In those cases you might pull 80k. Also, ever get a capital ship?
