Default Targeting Neutrals

I am in a campaign 1939. Flotilla Weddigen.

I occasionally see "neutrals". After reading U-boat War, I found that Hitler did not want neutrals targeted for political reasons. I think it was sometime in 1940, after the fall of France that he allowed such.

Is there a renown "penalty" if I attack neutral shipping?

thanks

Yes. You lose renown equal to the amount you would have gained if it was an enemy ship (I think).

What will make the neutral problem better is sergbuto has found a way to add lights to the neutral shipping in the game.So if this works out well...the neutrals will be running with lights on as they should have been and they will be easily recognized.

Also it's possible to edit one of the files so you get '0' renown for neutrals, or even plus renown if you're bent that way.

Yeah - I edited this to make the renown for neutrals the same as for enemy ships, but I only did that to eliminate the "unfair" penalty the game exacts when you sink neutrals that are traveling in an armed/escorted enemy convoy where they should be fair game. I still pay attention and take care not to attack neutrals traveling by themselves, but it will be awesome if sergbuto really can figure out a way to make the neutrals travel with lights on (when they're not in convoys) so you can have a better chance of ID'ing them as such (plus, they will look really cool, too, based on the screen shots I've seen).

I belive in if a neutral is in a convoy and is escorted by british warships it's fair game. it should not be there in the first place.

Yeah nothing more frustrating than to get into position for a shot and realize it's a neutral ship. Not sure about neurtals in a convoy but you don't get renown for sinking neutral ships.

I've sunk neutrals in convoys without hitting a single ship.

I was trailing a fairly large convoy (1942) that had 4 escorts. I was lining up for a nice torpedo solution on a T3 and the Liberty behind it when I though I'd just look around and see if I could see anything else. I did. A Black Swan was bearing towards me, but the search lights were off and he was only 1200 meters away. They must have changed course. I gave it a couple seconds so I could get my torpedos shot and off they went and off I went. Firing must have tipped off the swan cause she started chasing me as I was going deep. About 20 minutes later, I hear my helmsman cheering and then I really listened closely. You could hear explosions very faintly. A quick check of the map and there it was... one red sunk ship and one blue. But none of the three eels I fired had hit. Way I figure, they were so busy dodging around that they must have run in to each other. :rotfl: Too bad I didn't get the tonnage credit.
