Default What's your torpedo efficiency?

I don't know if anyone calculates their torpedo efficiency or not, but I think it's a pretty useful statistic to keep track of. Basically, you look at your total tonnage sunk, and divide by the number of torpedoes launched This gives you the average amount of tonnage sunk per torpedo. I wonder how much attention the Germans paid to this particular statistic in WWII, since torpedoes were expensive. You would think that they would want to know about how much tonnage they are getting per torpedo. Either way, it's useful to you as the captain to guage how well your patrols are going, torpedo-wise. You may sink twice as much tonnage in your new Type IX, but are you really doing any better than you were in your Type II?

So far, after 12 patrols, my average tonnage sunk per torpedo is 1540. Heavy fog really screws up my average, as I either miss or I don't hit critical areas, which means I need more torpedoes to sink the target. In nice weather, of course, I do a bit better.

So, what's your average?

I am thinking exactly the same. It's actually a new kind of motivation to deliver a decent statistic.

I my current patrol, I have reached my personal record in torpedoe efficiency. Manual targeting of course, and no reloading.

Sunk 1 Victory, 1 T3, and 2 NOTSf with a total of ~25,000 tons. Fired were 11 Torpedos(9 hits, 2 misses and zero duds). This makes average per torpedo 2272 tons, which I find extremely high for my rather average skills

I played together with a friend, and we were discussing tactics and solutions, which is kind of cool. We were always getting in a perfect position ahead of the target, and firing at 500-1000m, so that accounts for the great results, and a stroke of good luck of course.

That's a good one there, and you're right about it being another motivation to do well. It adds a bit more fun to the idea of just sinking ship after ship after ship. My best patrol, torpedowise, was in a Type IIA, it was my third patrol. I sunk a ship with each of my 5 torpedoes, all small and coastal merchants. It was around 12,000 tons, so my efficiency was around 2400. I don't have the exact number atm since I'm at work. Of course, it's hard to do better than 7,500 tons per torpedo, but that is the somewhat rare occasion when you take down a C3 with a single torp.

I think it's fun to keep track of, I want to see how others are doing as well. Also, anyone who posts their numbers, also post whether you have duds enabled or not, and whether you are doing auto or manual targetting and with or without weapons officer assistance.

Does no one else find this interesting? I think it is! Come on, surely some other people can post their personal stats on this.

Never actually done the math for this, but your efficiency will directly relate to your realism settings...

Finally decided to turn on Duds last night, had 6 duds in the first tour (4 on one C3!!) Thankfully the weather was nice so I used the deck gun (another factor affecting efficiency)

Without duds its possible to go 1 torp, one sunk target. C2's are the only ships I have a difficult time of going 1:1, this certainly isn't realistic...

Hmm, this is interesting.
Well, my own perception is that I miss a lot doing stupid things ...
Repeatedly shooting at a small merchant in heavy seas, etc.

In my latest career my tonnage is 2008/torpedo over four patrols.

I think this "efficiency statistic" will be a nice thing to add to the record I keep at the end of each career.

I find this interesting but have never kept track. I'm going to start when my current patrol ends.

This is the sort of statistic that an accountant would like to see.

I have enough trouble explaining why I used 1.2 widgets to get a job done when they specify only 1.1 widgets per job, without doing it in a game!!

Oh it's not that difficult. It's not something you have to keep tabs on constantly. I just look at my total tonnage sunk and divide by how many torps I've fired. If you've been in the same boat the whole time, say a Type VIIB, then you just multiply your patrols by 14 to get total torps fired. That is assuming that you always launch all your torpedoes, but that's almost always the case anyway. Sure there are some things that throw off your efficiency, like using the deck/aa gun, or ramming or something, but as a quick little thing to calculate it's a pretty cool thing to know. It gives you something else to be happy about after a patrol, looking at how well you used your torpedoes. It also is a reminder not to be wasteful, as a couple hasty shots will really screw up your efficiency (I tend to get hasty and mess up shots a lot.)

About two weeks ago I started my first career... ever.

I started with out with a IIA (first 3 patrols), each patrol I sunk only 1 ship I missed a lot and used way to much torpedo's for indivual ships.

Currently I've got a VIIB.
My 5th patrol was pretty good: 55897 tons which means an efficiency of 3993 tons/torpedo

I sunk an Illustrious Fleet Carrier near Scapa Flow with 4 torpedo's. Sinking big ships helps . Also I succesfully managed to sink some ships with the deckgun (2 small merchants, 1 tugboat, 1 trawler and a tropedoed C2, I used realistic reload times by the way ).

I just finished the 7th patrol, I sunk about 30000 tons --> 2143 t/t

93% realism (only external camera)
No weapons officer assitance
manual targeting
RuB and SH3cmdr

My torpedo efficiency is probably less than 60 percent. Oh well, this is the one area of SH3 that I have to really work on. During the historical missions I host, I usually find that the other captains work the main target or targets over quite well. So, the objective is met even with my poor shooting.
