Default Other uses for Flak?

I have used my flak guns to take down enemy aircraft and once I used it for target practice on an immobilized C2.....the boxes on deck explode when you shoot them enough times :P . But has anyone ever sunk a small merchant? I'm talking tugboat/patrol craft/trawler etc. The reason I ask is because I'm in a campaign with a IIA and with no deck gun and only 5 torps I have limited capabilities. I seems like you would be able to sink small vessels with a 2cm flak gun. Has anyone tried this?

i have sank small merchants, elco's, trawlers and tugs...mainly all small ships of all kinds with my AA guns, save wasting 8.8 rounds on small ships

but with the smaller AA guns i have sank elco's and trawlers, i dont like being on the surface for to long, the R.A.F have a field day with subs with smaller AA guns

Yep , the AA is great for those annoying Elco's. Just sink them quickly or they'll call in help or get a lucky shot at your crew.

Try shooting seagulls! Perhaps the people on the dock? I like to shoot at the waves when there is nothing else to shoot at. Look at all those sprites popping up out of the water...Cool

Don't shoot targets you don't want to kill

But as I know flak was often used on drowning ships to make additional air outlets to make them sink faster.

Neither the spectators nor the seagulls react to exploding shells and machine gun fire. I've tried it, and they were not the least bit perturbed. BTW, before SH3 came out someone on the boards here wrote a hilarious sarcastic post about modelling dead seagulls' trajectories to appease overly-critical gamers :rotfl: .

As for what you CAN use these guns for, I've found that the 37 mil's good on anything up to a tugboat, and all smaller flak works well on trawlers. The only problem is that some of the default AA gun sounds are wimpy; IIRC the 37mm doesn't even have an impact sound unless it causes an explosion.

An old classic - for when the watch officer fails to see a destroyer charging and firing.
