Default A Couple of Noob Questions...

Greetings, everyone!

I've been getting familiarized with the Sim, going through Submarine School and completing the first two Tutorials. I've been using the Navigation Tutorial particularly to practice following the larger ships, making maneuvers with the Porpoise, and figuring out how the various Tools in the Nav Map work.

However, my questions have to do with the Sim itself, and with Mods like a Submarine.

I have Version 1.5 with THEBERBSTER's Beginner Mega Mod installed.

If I wanted to install another Mod like the "IJN Kaidai 3B" from the Download library, is it as simple as unzipping the File, placing it in the Mods Folder, then using JSGME to activate the Mod? Or, should I create a separate Install of SH4 just to use the Kaidai?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Alan

Basically, almost... When you play the game, it automatically "saves" data into the Save folder, which can then interfere with a different mod set. So when changing mods, you almost always have to empty the Save folder also, which is generally the "C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH4" folder.

However, making copies of a "pristine" SH4 install, and putting it in several uniquely named folders, one for each mod set you want to use, and then using MultiSH4 to name different Save folders for each modded SH4 game folder, can greatly simplify life for you, once you get the hang of doing such.

propbeanie,

Many Thanks for the Reply! It sounds as if the best thing to do if I want to use the Kaidai is to create a separate Install for just that Mod.

I was just curious as I'm gazing way, way downrange at this point.

I still need much time in the Tutorials before I even think about the Kaidai; I haven't even fired a Torpedo yet, in anger or otherwise!!

Thanks again!

As propbeanie mentioned... that, is the way to go... as cross contamination, of game saves... can & will occur if you try to cross breed different mods together.

If using Steam... can do an initial SH4 install (strongly recommend ensuring of having SH4 Wolves of the Pacific: U-boat Missions (v1.5) after installing, going into properties for it & setting it to write status by making sure the read only box is unchecked... (found on the main 1st page... named "General" tab) then setting it to run as admin (found on the "compatibility" tab)... selecting apply then ok, to finalize that.

Once that is done, can then in \common, set up a brand new folder, named \SH-megamods & in there... set up for making copies of any & all SH 3/4 or even 5 mod sets... copying the guts from your pristine SH install. Making sure to name the folders, accordingly to what mod set you're going to roll with... dropping into those folders a fresh copy of JSGME (so as to make updating/adding or deleting mods... easier... ) & a fresh copy of MultiSH4 (so as to be able to set up a separate game saves folder... in "documents" so it is easy to know what that save folder is called... in the event you need to dump it & start a new folder.

This same outline applies for using SH4 (v1.4) as well... as with SH3 & SH5, too. For SH3 & 5... would recommend setting up a new folder inside of \SH-megamods & naming them as follows:

\SH3-megamods
\SH4-megamods
\SH5-megamods

This allows you to then, set up each copy made, in its own section there...

Hope this info is found to be... helpful, as always.... & didn't leave you confloozled, in following along.

Many thanks for the 411, M M!

I also downloaded the "US Sub Missions Pack" from the Library with 33 different Single Missions (SM 101-134); I presume a clean Install is needed for these, as well?

Like I mentioned, I'm way far off from the next clean Install, but every bit of info to make future Installs as painless as possible is always a big help.

Looking forward to trying some of these Mods as I become more adept in the Sim!

Cheers!
