That night on watch, just over two months into our boring SpecOp, a technical “T-Brancher” spook tucked away in the radio room got a distant sniff on our BRD-7 electronics surveillance system. Faint at first, he almost missed the MRK-50 Series Topol radar, code named Snoop Tray 2 by NATO. As he analyzed the signal captured by the BRD-7 further, his eyes lit up. At that time, only Victor IIIs and some Delta-class submarines used that type of radar.

Our (commanding officer), Cmdr. Oliver, did a happy dance in the corridor outside the radio room when he heard the news. I watched his jig from the control room, wondering why he seemed so excited.

You might want to be careful with this one.

Either the source didn't know better and told the story as he understood it, or they didn't know anything and just threw together some jargon.

The quote you included could be translated as "We caught a trout using our tow truck". There's another guy on here who can back me up, so trust me on this one.

I know what you mean ... there are some mistakes in the article, but all sea stories have the same theme ... this ain't no lie

Interesting indeed I knew there was a mission to photograph the pod on the Victor iii and there was a collision with K324 a Victor III which was in the bay at the time.

It's funny that Navy Intel thought it might be a new secret hyper drive when it was really just hindsight passive sonar.

Whatever the author is he's a good story teller

The guy’s an author, both fiction & non-fiction. This story sounds like a combination of both.
His experience: “Reed served as a U.S. Navy diver, submarine weapons technician, and espionage photographer for special operations aboard nuclear fast-attack submarines. He earned commendations for completing secret missions during the Cold War, several in concert with Navy SEAL Team One.”
