Watched "The Winds of War" again recently and now working on the sequel. Excellent series. Books were great of course.
Clip below has some pretty decent sub action sequences, aside from the corny dialogue from the guy playing the Captain. Looks like they used real fleet boat . Pampanito I am guessing or the Bowfin portraying the "Moray" Sub action starts at 42:37 mark. Takes elements of "Mush" Morton's actions off New Guinea in January 1943. |

captain makes a periscope sighting and the target is marked at 1700 yds. he drops the scope and proceeds to give a two minute narrative of his tactics. another officer takes another sighting (after the soliloquy) and the DE is now 1500 yds. over the next 15 seconds the DE closes to 850 yds. gotta love hollywood. on a side note, this clip reminded me of a couple of things. that the producers recast about half of the main characters from part 1 Winds of War and part 2 which is this clip of War and Remembrance. Bob Mitchum was so mis-cast at the lead character. Too tall, too old, and nowhere near as naval Pug Henry needed to be. Mitchum played the part like it was film noir, which IS his forte. anyway..... in a later episode, Byron Henry's CO does a Hollywood Rendition of the death of Commander Howard W. Gilmore of the USS Growler (SS-215). there are much better naval films, but the book are tremendous. you should read the books. ![]()

Books are amazing, read them years back. Have to disagree about Mitchum, he was perfect. in the role. Yes older, but he had the presence, no one else could have played the role, he really made the series, especially in Winds. Yes, several of the sub feats included are composite of real life events. Mortons shooting surviving troops, the down the throat shot on the DD, forced to surface when heavily damaged (see Salmon in Oct 44) and using deck guns to kill the japanese on the bridge and guns on the subchaser , escaping against all odds etc. |
