A quick shore story for FPS Chazley...

On your Youtube vids, you quote lines from Red October quite a bit.

I was homeported in Pearl Harbor on the Bremerton and several weeks before the movie debuted the word went out that they wanted to give us a free screening at the old base movie theater. The only catch was that we had to behave because there would be production folks at the back watching how we reacted.

Now, "free" and sailors go together like moths and a bright light bulb and the theater was packed.

Everything went great until the scene where Ryan asks himself, "How do you get 150 sailors to want to get off a submarine?".

Someone in the crowd yelled "All hands, this is the COB. COMMENCE FIELD DAY!!".

It brought the house down.

Rumor had it that was when the director knew he got it right.

I swear, that's a no sh- , uh, that really happened.

That's nothing compared to SUB BALL.

Imagine getting really dressed up to attend a homecoming dorm kegger and you've got the basic idea of the annual Submarine Ball.

About a year after the Red October story, we got word that the famous actor Tony Curtis was really One Of Us and would be attending the sub ball in Pearl. He had served on a fleet boat out of Pearl during WWII, which was neat but wasn't all that important.
What WAS important was finding out that his charming daughter, Jamie Lee, would also be attending.

We had a full Navy captain brief us that if any of us tried anything with Ms. Curtis, the Navy would not discipline us. That would be reserved for Mr. Curtis, in a parking lot of his choosing.
