Default Ready for the solar eclipse?

Its August 21st! Im expecting 80% partial eclipse of the sun from Maryland. Gonna try to take the day off and break out my 8" reflector and try to grab a few pics.

My wife and I plan to travel down to South Carolina to catch totality. We'll probably go to Columbia, where I was born.

Wear sunglasses and get some eye drops ... don't take this event for granted.

One of my favorite parks is down that way though its closer to the Sumter area. Poinsett State park constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Great for a quiet fall gettaway with the wifey. However many trees to see an eclipse

I'm hoping I live close enough to at least get the effect of totality. I'm about a hundred miles (160km) north.

Here is a map which shows how much of the eclipse will be visible and where. There's another total eclipse in 2024 which will be visible in North America.

You can search for eclipses by year here, or for more options, see the eclipses and transits section here.

BETTER: regular sunglasses block about 60% of light rays while eclipse glasses block 99.9% of light rays.

You shouldn’t be able to see anything through a safe solar filter except the Sun itself or something comparably bright, such as the Sun reflected in a mirror, a sunglint off shiny metal, the hot filament of an unfrosted incandescent light bulb, a bright halogen light bulb, a bright-white LED flashlight (including the one on your smartphone), or an arc-welder’s torch,” the AAS wrote in its press release. “All such sources should appear quite dim through a solar viewer.

Default View the solar eclipse

Here is a computer simulation of what the solar eclipse will look like for any area. Just enter your location and it works.
I'll get a little sliver of sun.

Ah...yes, I see.

If you can travel down around Volgograd on June 1st, 2030 then you can see an annular eclipse. Not quite as spectacular as a total eclipse, but it doesn't look like western Russia will see one of those until 2061.
