Default Charts made for predicting range ....in 2005

I am new to Silent Hunter III as of 2016.

So it amazes me so many times how other people, over the years, put in so much work to benefit everyone.

And... now... someone created these charts which help you deduce range to target based on the hash marks in the periscope / Uzo vs. the mast height.

They did this in....

...2005 !

http://webpages.charter.net/sawdust/sh3/sh3.html

And I benefit greatly from it.

This has helped me 3 times now where things are happening fast (workload) in a surface convoy attack or more important as I use 100 percent realism and sea conditions make the boat rock and visuals difficult with the periscope...to:

Keep periscope exposure short and get a general estimation of distance with a quick look.

Example: looks like a 23 meter mast height,... about 3 hashes.... and I look at the chart and fudge some numbers while the scope is going back down.

Wave splashes can make lock-ons break when you are trying to use the stadimeter.

I don't need this so much if the wave conditions are light. In that case I only use it as a first look estimation.

But in heavy wave conditions that aren't outside the limit of doing a periscope attack it has been very useful. Jot down some numbers on a few periscope observations. Declare your final observation as an attack observation. Tube doors open, Up-scope, determine you are happy with the visuals. Lock-up and fire.

Thanks where ever you are.
